- Sony has taken a sudden leave from social media following PlayStation’s verdict on physical games.
- Both PlayStation and Sony have racked up millions of views on their latest tweets amid intensifying backlash.
- PlayStation’s tweet on the matter has even received a community note.
A few days back, PlayStation announced that it would end physical disc support in 2028, and this decision has led to no shortage of backlash on social media. In fact, many have even cancelled their PS Plus subscriptions to boycott this decision.
Amid the chaos, Sony appears to have suddenly gone radio silent on social media.
Why it matters: Sony is typically quite active on social media, especially when it comes to promoting big upcoming movies and games.

Sony’s last Twitter post was made on July 1, marking a total of four days since the gaming giant last posted on the social media platform.
It should be noted that this was the same day PlayStation announced its plans to exit the physical games market. While Sony’s tweet itself was likely referencing Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s nearing release, the replies are all related to PlayStation abandoning physical discs.
The delta between the replies and likes on this particular tweet is also massive, with Sony attracting over 8,000 replies after just 10,000 likes. In total, Sony’s post has over 6.3 million views.
On the other hand, PlayStation itself has been missing in action ever since its announcement. The delta is even worse on PlayStation’s tweet, with the post attracting over 82,000 responses and less than 60,000 likes. In total, PlayStation’s tweet alone has over 127 million views on the platform at the time of writing.
Both PlayStation and Sony typically post daily on Twitter, so there is little doubt that the sudden social media silence is a result of the backlash from the latest announcement.
It is said that Sony was rather taken aback by the amount of backlash that resulted from its decision to get rid of physical discs in 2028.
As for the replies themselves, many users are trolling PlayStation and Sony for coming across as tone deaf on this matter. In addition to posting memes, some have also used harsh words to get their points across.
