Former PS Boss Warns That PS5 Prices Might Never Come Down And It’s The End of Cheap Consoles

Consoles Used to Launch at $399, But That Won't Be the Case in the Future!

Story Highlight
  • Shawn Layden suggests that we should never expect PS5 prices to come down again.
  • The days of cheaper consoles are over, and we shouldn’t expect $399 MSRP anymore.
  • He said that the prices used to drop to $199, but now that won’t happen.

The memory crisis has had a major impact on hardware prices, and consoles haven’t been able to escape that catastrophe either. Xbox recently hiked the prices, and PlayStation did the same before that, and the future doesn’t look promising.

A former PlayStation boss has now warned that the PS5 prices might never come down again, after the recent hike took its price to $650. This could also be the end of cheaper consoles, especially in the current world.

Why it matters: Recently, Lenovo stated that the prices might never come down again. Additionally, RAM manufacturers have also signed deals for many years ahead based on the current prices, suggesting a grim future.

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has weighed in on the current situation of the console market. He said that due to the chip shortage, the prices might never come down, which will lead to reduced console sales

A huge proportion of those units were sold once it got below $199. So, the price drop really accelerated a lot of those units of growth, which you won’t see, apparently, for this generation.

We shouldn’t expect $399 consoles in the future due to chip prices

He said that during older generations, they used to launch keep consoles at around $399; however, it dropped to $199 later, which led to a bigger upward curve, and a vast majority of sales came from that timeframe.

However, this isn’t the case with the current generation, and won’t be for future ones as well. This aligns with what many analysts have predicted, too, that following the Steam Machine, the next Xbox and PlayStation will cost at least $1,000.
