- An insider has reported that EA has started laying off staff.
- Multiple departments at the company have been affected by this recent round of layoffs.
- No number was disclosed, but the number of employees impacted was relatively low.
With layoffs looming over the biggest companies in the industry, the gaming world is set for a major reset. PlayStation is reportedly firing 50% of Bungie, while the situation at Xbox could not be any worse, with multiple studios under the threat of closure.
Gaming giants like Epic have already laid off over 1,000 employees this year alone, as the cost to make AAA video games has kept rising with no respite in sight. Now, another major publisher is letting go of its staff, according to an insider.
Why it matters: Layoffs at every major company in the industry emphasize how the gaming world is in dire need of an alternative way to develop AAA video games.

As reported by Destin Legarie on X, EA has started laying off employees, with job cuts impacting multiple parts of the company. This cycle of layoffs is relatively small, but according to the insider, more developers could be fired later on, as this is just the initial round of job cuts.
Staff have already been notified of their termination, but the number of employees let go has not been confirmed by the insider as of yet.
This is not the first time EA has laid off developers in 2026, as the publisher fired an undisclosed number of people in its Battlefield division this March, despite the latest game in the series becoming the best-selling shooting title of 2025.

Considering how the company’s CEO has outlined AI as the future, however, these new job cuts are not very surprising. In the past few days, layoffs have unfortunately become the new norm, with studios like Ninja Theory, which has a new game releasing in 2027, facing closure as gaming giants try to combat rising costs amid the AI boom.
