The Payments Can Be Spread Over Weeks Or Months!

Story Highlight
  • Xbox is reportedly integrating the buy now, pay later feature on the Xbox store for its games and hardware.
  • The tidbit was revealed via a dataminer who discovered a backend update on the Xbox website.
  • The leak mentions that there would be no interest involved, so this could be a decent alternative for gamers.

Xbox is increasingly focusing on new and flexible ways to connect with its fans. Whether it’s a renewed focus on exclusives or exploring new Game Pass tiers, the new leadership is already making some massive strides in this department.

New findings reveal that the Xbox website is now exploring bringing the ‘buy now, pay later’ feature via payment systems like PayPal and Klarna. This feature would essentially let you buy games to play first and pay for them later in different and adjustable ways.

Why it matters: While this flexible payment system looks great on paper, carelessly buying and putting payments on future dates can eventually leave you in mounting debt. Therefore, it’s a double-edged sword that is already generating controversy online.

Xbox Buy Now Pay Later
The Xbox website could soon include a buy now, pay later feature, data mining reveals.

This tidbit comes from the dataminer @redphx on X, who found that the Xbox website will let you buy games and possibly even hardware and pay later. You could break payments up over multiple weeks and up to a staggering 24-month period.

These flexible options would make $60+ AAA games and various Xbox consoles & accessories more affordable for gamers who can’t afford the whole purchase upfront.

The leaked details also mention interest-free payments, which would make this feature fair and convenient for gamers. However, it’s unclear whether all the available options would be free of interest entirely.

Xbox
Xbox is making big changes under the new leadership.

To clarify, PlayStation already has native buy now, pay later support via Klarna and PayPal Later, but both Valve and Xbox have yet to integrate it natively.

Xbox users can technically use the buy now, pay later method through external, third-party marketplaces or by paying with PayPal Pay Later. This datamine reveals that Xbox will add its own BNPL system to its checkout process in the future.

Do you think this new payment option will help gamers enjoy games before they can pay for them, or would the collective pending payments backfire over time? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
