- Ukrainian intelligence found an NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX computing module inside a captured Russian S-71M cruise missile.
- NVIDIA designed this compact, low-power chip for civilian AI, robotics, and computer vision tasks, not military use.

Russia’s advanced weapons program has reportedly turned to an unexpected piece of technology: hardware originally developed for compact AI and robotics systems. Ukrainian military intelligence claims that analysts examining a recovered Russian S-71M “Monochrome” cruise missile discovered an NVIDIA computing module based on the Jetson Orin platform.
The NVIDIA Jetson Orin platform was originally intended to handle artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics workloads directly on small devices. The detected component is identified as TE980M-A1, which corresponds to the Tegra T234 series utilized by the Jetson Orin NX. Interestingly, the unique Tegra T239 processor created for the Nintendo Switch 2 is based on this same architecture.

The discovered component is the Jetson Orin NX, which has 16GB of RAM. This is a very small System-on-Module intended primarily for autonomous systems where space and power consumption are important.
It includes an 8-core Arm Cortex-A78AE processor, an NVIDIA Ampere GPU with 1,024 CUDA Cores and 32 Tensor Cores, and dedicated NVDLA accelerators for inference. NVIDIA now claims that the Orin NX 16 GB can achieve up to 157 TOPS of AI performance when using its latest power modes.
From power profiles ranging from 10 to 25W, the 16GB Jetson Orin NX initially provided AI performance of up to 100 TOPS. Increased frequencies across the GPU, CPU, DLA, and other blocks were enabled by the introduction of JetPack 6.2 and Super Mode.
With a power profile of up to 40W, this overclocking enables performance of up to 157 TOPS in sparse INT8. Robots, drones, smart cameras, and other autonomous devices that must process sensor data locally and in real time without depending on a data center connection are therefore especially well-suited for it.
That is precisely what gives the discovery importance. The S-71M “Monochrome” is connected with the Russian Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter and, unlike the S-71K “Kover,” is described as a variation capable of autonomous target detection and identification.
During the attack’s final phase, a Jetson Orin may receive photos from an electro-optical camera, perform computer vision algorithms to detect or classify things, and relay the results to the guidance system. It’s worth noting that the cruise missile has an effective range of up to 400 kilometers.

This recent case highlights the challenges of preventing dual-use Western commercial components from ending up in military systems. Jetson was developed to bring robotics, machine vision, autonomous devices, manufacturing, logistics, and research to the forefront. In reality, the company markets its Orin modules as tiny AI computers for robotics and autonomous machines, where their high inference power per watt is especially beneficial.
After the discovery, NVIDIA released an official statement. They stated that their Jetson Orin chips are geared toward students, developers, and startups. They further indicated that these chips are not officially available for purchase in Russia and were not intended for military use.
Furthermore, the company also stated that many used machines are moving through wholesalers and secondary marketplaces. As a result, once the hardware is sold, they will be unable to track individual devices. NVIDIA also stated that it will take action if it discovers any of its clients breaking US export rules.
