- PlayStation 5 sold over 3.9 million units during the second quarter of 2025, bumping the overall figure to 84.2 million
- It is Sony’s fifth best-selling console and is tracking behind the PS4 by only 2 million units shipped in the same period.
- PlayStation also maintained a consistent 119 million monthly active users.
The PS5 has continued to perform well despite hardware shortages earlier in its lifetime, followed by multiple price increases over the years. Its sales performance has remained steady and somewhat close to the last-gen platform, and the new milestone further cements that.
The console has now shipped over 84.2 million units worldwide. In other words, it is now only tracking behind the PS4 by 2 million if launch timelines are aligned. Multiple successful Sony exclusives have contributed to millions of new PS5 sales over the years.
Why it matters: The PS5 sales trajectory shows it still has strong legs and continues to sell units consistently like the PS4. PlayStation also generated $4.27 billion in revenue from game software during the last quarter.

The new Q2 2025 Sony report shows that the PS5 sold 3.9 million units during the quarter, which is a staggering 1.4 million increase from the first quarter this year. Additionally, the console sold 0.1 million more than the Q2 of last year, showing a steady growth over time.
It now ranks as Sony’s 5th best-selling console, trailing behind the PS2 (160 million), PS4 (117.2 million), original PlayStation (102 million), and PS3 (87.4 million).
PS5 may soon surpass the PS4’s sales—which were 86.2 million at the same period—over the next quarter. The next big push to the PS5 sales will likely happen during the approaching holiday period.
The growth trajectory also continued in gaming, with 6.3 million first-party game sales, a million higher than Q2 2024. Overall, over 80.3 million game sales were recorded during the last quarter.

PS5’s stable performance shows that Sony is in no hurry to launch the next iteration and plans to expand its lifecycle even further. Sony CFO Lin Tao clarified that the console is in the middle of its journey, and many users still enjoy the console.
