Role-playing games are running the industry right now, with the biggest releases of 2025 belonging to some niche of the genre. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Oblivion Remastered, and recently, the JRPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, have all received universal acclaim and exceeded commercial expectations.
The latter, especially, has become a major success story for the indie world, putting up brilliant sales numbers. And, from the looks of it, the stats are only improving for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as the game is showing no signs of slowing down.
Why This Matters: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s great numbers over a week after release are a positive sign for smaller gaming studios.
The JRPG has hit a new concurrent player peak on Steam, a whopping ten days after releasing, as it amassed 129,461 players just yesterday. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had already reached the 100k mark on launch, but the continuous rise showcases its strong legs and positive word of mouth.
Average player counts have also remained fairly consistent, a major feat for the single-player genre. These games typically lose players over time, but the Sandfall Interactive RPG is going in the opposite direction.
Considering the hype surrounding the RPG, the numbers are not really a big surprise. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has received such universal acclaim that even the French President chimed in to call the JRPG a showcase of French talent and declared it French pride.
Furthermore, the Sandfall Interactive title has a near-perfect score on Metacritic and is currently one of the highest-rated games of 2025, making it a surefire GOTY contender.
The game sold 500k copies in just one day and took only three days to reach a million sales. Hence, the Sandfall title has been an immense success, and the climbing numbers assure that we could get a sequel.
