Obsidian Planning Major Visual Upgrade!

Story Highlight
  • Fans criticized Avowed’s previous trailer, pointing to downgraded graphics as a major flaw.
  • An insider has now revealed that the game has been shifted to Unreal Engine 5.3, and the graphics are constantly being improved.
  • The Coalition is also said to be helping the team with Unreal Engine 5.3.

Avowed, the latest RPG from Obsidian, is one of Xbox’s biggest games of 2024. Fans are really excited to dive into a fully-fledged RPG from the studio, but the upcoming game has faced some criticism in the past.

Most fans liked the game’s original reveal. However, when last year’s gameplay trailer was released later, many were disappointed, as the visuals appeared to be quite a bit worse.

Possibly looking to remedy the problem, Obsidian seems to have shifted development to Unreal Engine 5.3

Why it matters: The latest version of this engine helps improve optimization, ensuring the game not only looks better but also performs better while maintaining a high level of visual quality.

Avowed
Avowed Will Even Feature Modern Weapons Like Guns

Jaz Corden, one of the industry’s most reliable leakers, has shared an interesting piece of information on Twitter/X. He has revealed Avowed has been moved to Unreal Engine 5.3.

Interestingly, he also hinted that the team is receiving support from The Coalition, a studio who is known for its proficiency in all things Unreal Engine 5. The Coalition is working on Gears 6 itself but has been known to help other developers, including Undead Labs.

Unreal Engine 5.3 is a more iterative update that expands on the core elements of this engine. However, it also introduces various new features, which can be seen in the video below.

What this means for Avowed is that the game should look better than before by the time it arrives. Even Obsidian acknowledged that the gameplay trailer wasn’t the best and that the graphics will be improved.

It has also been revealed that the game will arrive in the Fall of 2024 as an Xbox exclusive. According to Jez Corden, the shift to Unreal Engine 5.3 will not negatively impact the development in any way.

Xbox’s internal teams are currently leading the charts regarding Unreal Engine 5.

The recently released Hellblade 2 is considered a massive triumph for this engine, and with The Coalition helping out the studios, Xbox is expected to continue refining this technology to perfection.

Avowed is unlikely to measure up to Hellblade 2 or the rumored Gears 6, but the game should still benefit from the upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.3.
