Story Highlights
  • Metacritic has published a list of 2023’s worst releases.
  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum takes the top spot on the platform with a score of just 34/100.
  • All titles mentioned on the list have a score below 50.

2023 has introduced various terrible games.

Concluding the year, Metacritic has decided to step back from talking about the best games and highlight the worst titles of 2023. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is at the top of the list, which has a score of just 34/100.

Why it matters: 2023 was filled with high-quality games. Many found it difficult to keep up with the swift pace of AAA titles coming out this year, but amid the gold, scams like The Day Before and other terrible games were dropped frequently.

Metacritic has released the list of the worst releases of the year according to the score, and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum takes the spot on the list.

This game caused Daedelic Entertainment to step away from development after the studio worked on the project for five years. Adding insult to injury, the game’s publisher wrote an apology using ChatGPT, solidifying this Lord of the Rings title as 2023’s worst game.

Flashback 2 took the second spot on the list with a score of 35/100 on the platform. Greyhill Incident is a survival horror game of very poor quality, taking the third spot on the year’s worst releases with a score of just 38/100 on Metacritic.

Unsurprisingly, Quantum Error is the 4th worst release of 2023, as it was criticized for a terrible story and poor enemy AI. Apart from these elements, the bugs and glitches in the game did the rest of the damage.

Skull Island: Rise of Kong

While we expected to see titles like Rise of Kong and Walking Dead: Destinies in the top 10, they did not have enough reviews to make it on the list. The former had terrible cutscenes, while the latter was lambasted for its poor gameplay.

Metacritic has only added titles with over seven reviews from professional critics, and while both of the aforementioned games have much worse ratings than The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, they are not part of the list.

Unfortunately, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a very deserving game of this spot. It was far from playable, and fans found it quite baffling that Daedalic Entertainment could not come up with something better for a massive IP like Lord of the Rings.
