New MW3 Confused For Old MW3!

Story Highlights
  • Modern Warfare 3 shares its title with the 2011 game.
  • Metacritic users are review-bombing the decade-old game by mistake.
  • Early impressions of the campaign have not been positive.

Activision released Modern Warfare 3, the conclusion to its Modern Warfare trilogy, in 2011. Over a decade later, the studio is gearing up to release the latest iteration of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3, on 10 November.

If that sounds confusing to you, you’re not alone. Over the last few years, the publisher has rebooted its Modern Warfare trilogy, using effectively the same titles for its games.

While Modern Warfare 3 is a few days away from release, it seems gamers are already preparing to review bomb the game. However, due to the confusing title, Modern Warfare 3 from 2011 has fallen subject to negative reviews.

Why it matters: Review bombing is not a new practice in the gaming industry. However, in this instance, angry gamers have hilariously begun to target a decade-old release by mistake.

As reported on Twitter, 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 has recently received several negative reviews. This has likely been due to the negativity surrounding 2023’s Modern Warfare 3.

We don’t blame the users for being confused, but it appears they have been a bit hasty in leaving a negative review on Metacritic. Since the upcoming game hasn’t been released yet, it is not possible to review the newer Modern Warfare 3 on Metacritic.

Following the recently unlocked early access, Modern Warfare 3 received criticism for its short and underwhelming campaign. Despite featuring popular characters like Makarov in this rebooted saga, the game mostly disappoints with its narrative and gameplay.

Critics appear to share a similar opinion about the campaign. As pointed out by Ralph, the latest campaign is easily one of the lowest rated in the Call of Duty franchise, though the overall rating is yet to be decided.

On the multiplayer side, it also relies on nostalgia, using all the maps from the older Modern Warfare 2, not to be confused with 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. This has led to the opinion that Activision’s $70 price tag is unjustified.

As always, we do not condone the practice of review bombing. Even with these disappointments, Call of Duty does not deserve the 0/10 ranking.

However, we will admit it is quite hilarious to see gamers directing their anger toward such an old game, even if it may have been unintentional.

Modern Warfare 3 will be available to play next week. Like its predecessors, it will offer three fully-fledged game modes, introducing zombies to the Modern Warfare franchise for the first time.

However, judging from current reactions, this may not be enough to salvage its reputation.
