Marathon Has Lost Over 95% of Its Players On Steam

Marathon Might Be On Its Last Legs!

Story Highlight
  • Marathon has lost more than 95% of its Steam players since launch.
  • The game seems to be struggling more than ever now despite launching less than 6 months ago.
  • Season 3 officially launches later next month, but it remains to be seen if Bungie can save the game.

Marathon’s struggles are no secret to anybody who has followed the game since its release. Although PlayStation continues to support the game, its rapidly declining player count raises tons of red flags about the extraction shooter’s future.

In fact, Marathon has now lost more than 95% of its players on Steam.

Why it matters: Big games like 2XKO have recently been shut down after failing to hold players after launch, so there is no telling what will happen with Marathon if things continue like this.

Bungie Has Also Moved On From Destiny 2

Recently, Marathon has been struggling to even reach concurrent peak player counts of 5,000 on Steam. In the last 24 hours, the extraction shooter peaked at a mere 3,783 players.

This player count is down from a peak of 88,337 players on the platform, a roughly 96% decline over the last 5 months. While Steam does not represent every platform in this case, the extraction shooter reportedly sold the best on PC, so it’s hard to imagine the situation on PS5 being any better.

Preparations are currently underway for Marathon Season 3, but this may be one of the final few chances for the game to show some momentum. At this rate, it wouldn’t be surprising to see PlayStation pull the plug and focus Bungie’s efforts elsewhere.

Marathon May Never Fully Recover

Season 3 is set to finally introduce a full PVE mode, but it remains to be seen if this will be a huge deal to audiences who have found Marathon uninteresting so far.

What do you think Bungie needs to change first to bring players back to Marathon?
