- Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls reportedly sold under 3,000 physical copies at launch in Japan.
- The figure makes the much-anticipated title the weakest retail debut for a major Arc System Works fighting game.
- This Marvel-based fighter has even performed much worse than Marvel vs. Capcom titles from many years ago.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls continues to underdeliver. Following a weaker-than-expected worldwide debut, the game has seemingly failed to hit the mark with the Japanese audience.
In what marks Arc System Works’ worst retail debut in Japan, the title seems to have completely missed out on this region’s attention.
Why it matters: Japan is arguably the most popular region for fighting games, and Arc System Works already has a huge audience there due to its work on titles like Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
First week retail sales of Marvel Toukon in Japan were below 3k units.
This is the worst launch for an Arc System fighter in Japan (excluding super niche stuff like DNF Duel), well below most of the Guilty Gear, BlazBlue and even Under Night in Birth.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has reportedly posted a very weak physical launch in Japan, with early retail sales coming in below 3,000 copies.
Not only does this make Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls an underperformer compared to IPs like Guilty Gear, but it also means that the game has done much worse than past Marvel titles in the region.
As reported on Twitter, Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, one of the weakest entries in the series, racked up over 10,000 physical sales in Japan during the first week nearly 10 years ago.
Similarly, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 on PS4 managed to outsell the recently-launched title by a small margin many years ago.

Many believe the game’s poor performance is a result of Japan simply not having enough interest in Marvel IPs.
Although the Marvel Vs. Capcom games were very popular in the region, they had the Capcom name backing them, which may explain why the lack of Japanese IPs this time around has led to this disappointing debut performance in Japan.
What do you think hurt Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls’ Japanese launch?
