Sony No Longer Too Worried About PS5 Sales, Says Memory Crisis Timing Is “Lucky”

Expert Verified By

Sony CEO Is Certainly Optimistic About The Situation!

Story Highlight
  • Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki says the memory shortages came at a “lucky” time for PlayStation.
  • He notes that the PS5 is in the latter half of its lifespan, so Sony isn’t too worried about selling more consoles.
  • The gaming giant’s entire focus is on monetizing the console’s existing users for now.

The memory crisis has hit practically every manufacturer in the world quite hard, creating uncertainty around multiple consumer-focused industries.

With the crisis showing no signs of slowing down, Sony has brought forward an interesting perspective to the discussion. Compared to everyone else, PlayStation has a more hopeful outlook, stating that the timing for the memory shortages is somewhat “lucky.”

Why it matters: Hardly anybody is optimistic about the current landscape of the tech industry, so the Sony CEO’s statement is certainly interesting, especially with PS5 sales expected to slow down.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki recently discussed the memory shortages regarding PlayStation and the PS5.

Although Sony would probably prefer a world without this crisis, the CEO says that the gaming giant is lucky that the crisis happened later rather than sooner. As per Hiroki Totoki, the company doesn’t need to pursue console sales this late into the PS5’s lifecycle.

This is why the gaming giant can stay somewhat relaxed and focus on users who have already purchased the hardware. He pointed to the 125 million monthly active PlayStation users, with Sony moving forward with goals to monetize these users.

It is lucky. We’re at the latter half of the lifecycle for the console, which means we don’t need to aggressively sell the console today.
