Capcom Claims To Be Uninterested In Acquisition By Xbox

Xbox Must Look Elsewhere!

Capcom is one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world, striving to make memorable games. Over the years, the publisher has become famous for many IPs, but the likes of Resident Evil and Street Fighter stand out among the rest.

Capcom has made huge breakthroughs in the market as it is Japan’s biggest publisher, experiencing over a 1200% stock increase in the last decade after a consistent output of high-quality games.

Due to the publisher’s current position, it claimed to be uninterested in mergers and acquisitions when asked about the subject recently. This company was specifically asked about a merger with Microsoft, but it showed no interest.

Why it matters: Xbox has been on a spree of acquisitions recently, and Capcom would be a valuable asset to the company. The gaming giant was also interested in Japanese companies like Nintendo.

Upon being asked what would happen if Microsoft approached Capcom intending to acquire it, Capcom’s COO Haruhito Tsujimoto said:

“I would gracefully decline the offer, because I believe it would be better if we were equal partners.”

When asked about mergers in general, Tsujimoto admitted that mergers have become a recent trend in the industry. He believes that Capcom was a target at one point, but it prefers organic growth over acquisitions.

Capcom believes in training and developing human resources in-house to carry out its strategies. The company is open to external help but has shown no intentions of merging or acquiring a different studio.

In terms of collaborations, Capcom recently worked with Xbox to bring Exoprimal to Xbox Game Pass as a day-one third-party release. However, the game was not among the publisher’s best releases of 2023.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Last year, a rumor claimed Microsoft had its eyes set on Capcom. Tsujimoto may have referenced this rumor when answering the question about a merger with Microsoft.

Nonetheless, Capcom appears content with its current strategy, focusing on in-house development and IPs. Recently, the publisher achieved a new milestone with the Resident Evil franchise, as the series has sold over 146 million copies.

Capcom has performed better than ever in 2023. Games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6 are among the best-rated titles of the year, receiving praise from critics and fans.

The studio intends to continue its focus on core franchises, potentially working on several new remakes, as hinted by a survey in June. On the other hand, Microsoft has shifted focus to acquiring Activision Blizzard.

The gaming giant’s latest acquisition has just received provisional approval from the CMA, hinting at the closure of the deal by the end of 2023.
