Mortal Kombat 1 is the fighting game IP’s debut on latest consoles. It puts the new hardware to good use, delivering lifelike visuals and the most brutal gore in the series.
The game is running on NetherRealm Studios’ upgraded engine and is confirmed to be arriving on the PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and the Nintendo Switch. However, an advertisement points to even more platforms.
While Mortal Kombat 1 was expected to skip last-generation consoles, a new advertisement appears to be hinting at a PS4 port for the fighting game.
Why it matters: The PS4 and Xbox One are much more popular than the recent consoles currently, being home to millions of users. This makes these platforms interesting for publishers and developers.

According to a user on Twitter, GameStop’s Mortal Kombat 1 pre-order advertisement lists PS4 and PS5 as the platforms. As such, GameStop may have spilled the beans on a potential port coming after the current-generation release.
Previously, the studio intended last-generation ports for Mortal Kombat X, the first Mortal Kombat game for the PS4. However, last-generation versions of Mortal Kombat X were eventually canceled.
NetherRealm Studios may be looking to revisit this strategy for its latest title. Recently, studios like Respawn Entertainment have also announced a last-generation port for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
The developer may follow suit with its own last-generation ports, but it should be noted that GameStop could have made a mistake with this advertisement. Therefore, this information should be taken with a grain of salt.
Mortal Kombat 1 has been designed from the ground up to support current-generation consoles. However, the game is also headed to the much weaker Nintendo Switch hardware.
Early copies of the Nintendo Switch release have recently leaked, and the first impressions are far from positive. The game struggles to run well on the handhelds, and the leaker claims it delivers a subpar experience.
Nonetheless, this version could be used to justify an eventual PS4 and Xbox One release if that is the plan for NetherRealm Studios. It should be noted that NetherRealm Studios is not leading the Nintendo Switch version.
Mortal Kombat 1 is headed to PC and consoles on September 19. It delivers a rebooted story mode timeline, gameplay additions like the Kameo system, the return of 3D-era characters, and more.
All of this could make it the definitive Mortal Kombat experience to date, and a potential last-generation release may also lead to excitement from fans who have yet to upgrade to new consoles.
