PlayStation Portal To Cost $200; Does Not Support PS Plus Cloud Streaming

Cloud Handheld Formerly Called Project Q!

Sony announced the PlayStation Project Q in May during the last PlayStation showcase. Several months later, Sony has finally confirmed an official price tag and a new name for the device, PlayStation Portal.

The PlayStation Portal will launch later in 2023 and cost $200.

Why it matters: This price point may not be too appealing for users considering the limited capabilities of the streaming handheld from PlayStation.

The Project Q was in development for several years, with Sony signing a patent for the device as early as 2015.

PlayStation confirms the handheld will launch with an 8″ LCD screen running at 1080p/60FPS. This should allow for a great gaming experience with the small screen.

Reports also confirm the device is targeting a battery life similar to the DualSense controllers. However, Sony has not finalized the exact size of the battery yet, so this is subject to change.

The portable device connects to the PS5 remotely through Wi-Fi, allowing users to stream already installed games from the console. However, PlayStation’s recently introduced PS5 cloud streaming is not supported.

Therefore, PS5 games that can be streamed over PS Plus Premium will not work with the PlayStation Portal.

Sony has also announced new accessories like the PlayStation Pulse Elite wireless headset, expanding the overall ecosystem of the PS5 console.

In addition to the PlayStation Portal, Sony is expected to launch a new revision of the PS5 later this year. The first images of the console have already been leaked, showing a different but familiar design for the new PlayStation console.
