Update:-
Konami has come forward and clarified the resolution and frame rate targets of the Master Collection on each console.
According to the new information, the games target 1080p/60FPS on every platform but the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo consoles are limited to 1080p/30FPS in docked mode, while handheld mode runs at 720p/30FPS.
This makes it a much more compelling offering than a direct PS3 and Xbox 360 port running at 720p resolution. However, some may still find themselves disappointed at the lack of 4K support.
Original Story:-
Metal Gear Solid is one of the biggest franchises of Konami, achieving over 60 million sales worldwide. During the recent PlayStation Showcase, Konami announced the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1 and the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3.
This confirmed that the franchise was back, and Konami had major plans for its future, starting with the Master Collection Volume 1, a repackaging of older classics to introduce the IP to modern audiences on consoles and PC.
However, a recent wave of previews has led to a disappointing piece of information about the collection. As reported by IGN, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 still run at 720p on the new hardware.
Why it matters: This is a much lower resolution than the norm today and may be upsetting for new audiences looking to play these classics for the first time.
IGN confirms that Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are direct ports of the HD Collection made by Bluepoint Games two generations ago.
This collection was designed around the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles, capping out at 720p resolution. The 720p resolution target is common across all consoles, even for the capable Xbox Series X and PS5 releases.
On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch versions of both games are locked at 30FPS. While the Nintendo Switch is known to be less capable than most consoles, it should be able to handle titles as old as Metal Gear Solid 3 at 60FPS.
However, Konami has limited the frame rate for the Nintendo Switch. Considering games like Metal Gear Solid 2 were designed to be played at 60FPS, the 30FPS limit could be detrimental to the overall experience.
The previews suggest the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1 will support 60FPS on other consoles, but Nintendo Switch is the only one to be left out, with the preview also noting drops below 30FPS on the current Nintendo Switch build.
Konami appears to have refrained from making massive changes to the collection, and the previews have led to more confusion about Konami’s decisions with the Master Collection.
Additionally, Konami has already teased a second Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, potentially hinting at Metal Gear Solid 4 for modern consoles. However, judging from the recent previews, the iconic PS3 exclusive may not see many updates either.
