High On Life Runs At Higher Resolution on PS5 Than Xbox Series X

But PS5 Version Shows Performance Issues!

High on Life was released on PC and Xbox consoles on December 13, 2022. The game was available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, and its impressive gameplay allowed it to take the third-highest spot on the subscription’s list of popular titles.

It also dominated the weekly Steam best-sellers list at release. Several months later, High on Life made its way to PS4 and PS5 consoles. Following the PlayStation release, Digital Foundry has compared the various console versions of the game.

According to the testing, the PS5 version offers a higher resolution than Xbox Series X.

Why it matters: On paper, the Xbox Series X is a more capable console than the PS5. Microsoft boasts that it is the most powerful console, but comparisons show that the PS5 and Xbox Series X can often be neck and neck in games.

Like most games, High on Life offers a quality and performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X. According to Digital Foundry, the performance mode runs at 1800p on PS5, and the Quality mode at 4K.

On the other hand, Xbox Series X runs both modes at 1440p, leading to inferior visuals than the PS5. Surprisingly, this leads to worse performance on the PS5 than the Xbox Series X.

The PS5 version also includes a unique animation issue, leading to certain movements appearing laggy even when the game holds a steady 60FPS. This issue was part of the Xbox Series S|X version at launch but has been fixed with patches.

Furthermore, the PS5 port struggles to maintain 60FPS in performance mode, often dropping as low as 40FPS. These drops are nearly non-existent on the Xbox Series X version.

Despite the higher resolution on the PS5, the video concludes that the Xbox Series X version is the more optimized release.

This may have been because High on Life was created for these consoles exclusively. In addition to performance issues, the PS5 port shows subpar ambient occlusion, which may be a visual bug.

While there are some noticeable issues with the PS5 version, future patches are expected to address many of these problems. As noted above, the Xbox Series S|X ports showed similar issues, which were fixed through patches later down the line.
