Valheim has been available on PC for over two years. The survival game has garnered a lot of popularity on the platform and finally made its way to last and current-gen Xbox consoles just a few days ago.
Valheim skipped on a PlayStation release, leading to disappointment for PlayStation owners. When asked about a potential PS4 or PS5 release, a senior developer clarified that Xbox is the main focus.
However, an Xbox Game Pass email hinted at an eventual PlayStation port. According to the email, Valheim is only exclusive to Xbox consoles for six months.
Small exclusivity windows are nothing new in the gaming industry. Both Xbox and PlayStation have resorted to such measures for multiple games in the past, with examples like Valheim and the upcoming Final Fantasy 16.
However, a timed exclusivity window does not confirm that a game will be available on other platforms. A similar scenario was seen with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a timed exclusive for the PS4.
The game was eventually released on PC but is still unavailable on Xbox consoles. As such, a PlayStation release can not be guaranteed because Valheim is a timed exclusive; it should give fans some hope for the future.
As stated above, senior developer Jonathan Smars stated that the team was focused on Xbox, but he did not outright deny a PlayStation port. He said:
“Currently, we’re only looking at the Xbox, but you never know.”
Based on the developer’s statement and the six-month exclusivity, a PlayStation release seems more likely than ever before. However, nothing has been confirmed yet. Valheim has already captured audiences on PC, and a PlayStation port would further help the survival game reach out to new players worldwide.
