Square Enix Doubling Down On Xbox Releases!

Story Highlight
  • Square Enix released Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox earlier this year.
  • The studio saw a positive response and now intends to release more titles on the platform.
  • Final Fantasy 16 is also expected for Xbox.

Square Enix has found moderate success with its biggest IPs recently. Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have been critical hits, but their commercial performance left a lot to desired.

Following these releases, the company confirmed it would go multiplatform, releasing titles on Xbox and PC. The gaming giant has reiterated this stance recently, stating that it will release more games for Xbox moving forward.

Why it matters: Xbox and Square Enix have not had the best relationship recently. However, this relationship is steadily improving.

Square Enix released Final Fantasy 14 for Xbox on March 21. After observing the community’s response for several months, the developer has come up with a new approach.

According to Eurogamer, the director of Final Fantasy 14 said that the release of this MMORPG on Xbox worked out well because the community responded positively. Because of that, Square Enix will strengthen its connections and double down on the Xbox platform.

We do want to release more Square Enix games on Xbox, and there will be more of our titles released on Xbox.

The producer appreciated Xbox boss Phil Spencer by describing his efforts in bringing Final Fantasy to Xbox. Previously, Square Enix had a strong exclusivity deal going with PlayStation, but this deal has led to poor sales.

Final Fantasy 16 is also coming to PC, and other developers have already teased a similar release for the Xbox consoles.

Ultimately, Square Enix hopes to escape its current problems through this move. The gaming giant is still quite popular, but it has struggled to adapt to the growing challenges of modern AAA gaming.

Xbox itself has gone multiplatform recently, so the company is all too familiar with such an approach.
