Square Wants To Bring FF16 To More Platforms!

Story Highlight
  • The Final Fantasy 16 producer says Square Enix wants to release the game on more platforms after PC.
  • This decision could bring the JRPG to Xbox Series S|X consoles.
  • It is also speculated that Square Enix is considering a Nintendo Switch 2 release.

Final Fantasy 16 is one of the few games available exclusively on the PS5. However, this is set to change soon, with Square Enix currently working on the PC port, which is expected to arrive later this year.

While this port was expected to bring Final Fantasy 16’s journey to a conclusion, producer Naoki Yoshida has sparked a new hope. According to the producer, the JRPG is planned for more platforms, opening the doors to Xbox Series S|X versions.

Why it matters: While Final Fantasy was mostly limited to PlayStation at one time, this series has been multiplatform for the longest time now.

Previously, a reliable leaker stated that Final Fantasy 16 could be on its way to Xbox. However, the latest statement comes from producer Naoki Yoshida, who recently commented on the situation in an interview.

Speaking to Noisy Pixel, he remarked that the journey of Final Fantasy is not over.

Once the PC version is released, we’re thinking about moving to other platforms as well.

While he did not point to specific platforms, Microsoft’s latest consoles are the obvious picks. Final Fantasy 15 was already available on Xbox, and PlayStation seems more interested in retaining the exclusivity of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

Since Final Fantasy 16 does not appear to have sold more than 3 million units on PS5, more platforms could deliver a much-needed sales boost.

There is also a chance that the JRPG will eventually arrive on Nintendo hardware.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 expected to launch in 2025, Square Enix may plan to release its latest entry on this hardware. However, it is difficult to say whether the Nintendo Switch 2 would be able to handle a game that already pushed the PS5 to its limits.

Anyhow, Xbox fans will be glad to know that Square Enix is looking into releases for more platforms. As one of last year’s best-rated titles, Final Fantasy 16 would be a welcome addition to Microsoft’s console gaming library.
