- Xbox Series X will get a performance boost over PS5 due to AMD FSR 4.1.
- The Microsoft console offers double the INT8 performance and includes modern FSR plugins that the PS5 doesn’t.
- Of course, the Sony console can run FSR 4.1, but the boost it gets will be much smaller than on the Series X.
Ever since its launch, FSR 4 has allowed AMD to go head-to-head with Nvidia and its DLSS upscaling technology. But the company has received criticism from fans for not extending FSR 4.1 support, limiting it to new-generation hardware only.
This changed recently, however, as AMD announced that the upscaling tech would be heading to RDNA 2 devices, including the Xbox Series X. As it turns out, the Microsoft console could gain a significant edge over the PS5 thanks to AMD’s FSR 4.1.
Why it matters: Sony cutting corners in PS5 production hasn’t hurt them yet, but with the introduction of FSR 4.1 to Xbox next year, it could finally bite them in the back.
According to analysis from Moore’s Law Is Dead, the Xbox Series X will be able to run a higher quality version of AMD FSR 4.1, giving it a significant boost in performance and image quality over the PS5.
The analyst explained that Series X delivers twice the INT8 performance of the PS5, with 48.6 TOPS versus the Sony hardware’s 20.6 TOPS. Furthermore, Xbox Series X has an APU that sits in the high-end RDNA 3.5 ballpark, meaning the console will deliver image quality and performance players only see when they upgrade to PS5 Pro.

According to the analyst, developers have also reported that the Xbox Series X currently has modern FSR plugins like FSR 3, which are software tools that allow easy integration of the upscaler’s frame generation technology. On the other hand, PS5 is stuck on FSR 2.2 due to Sony’s focus on the PSSR upscaling suite, making the implementation of FSR 4.1 a bit harder.
Of course, none of this means the PS5 is too weak to run FSR 4.1, as Moore’s Law is Dead explained that hacked versions of the weaker Steam Deck have run the upscaling suite and achieved a performance boost. However, the improvement is much smaller than that of an RDNA 2 GPU, giving the Xbox Series X a noticeable advantage over the PS5.
