Older AMD Hardware Is Set to Receive A Massive Boost!

Story Highlight
  • AMD introduced FSR 4 with RX 90 series GPUs, and it was locked to the generation.
  • The company has now announced that FSR 4.1 will be coming to older hardware.
  • RDNA 2 and 3 devices will now be able to utilize the full potential of the AI upscaler.

FSR was AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s upscaling tech, DLSS. While the latter is still the superior version, FSR 4 has been a big step in the right direction, bringing image quality closer to Nvidia’s. Still, it was locked to the latest-generation hardware.

However, AMD has made a huge announcement and revealed that FSR 4 is now headed to both RDNA 3 and 2 devices. The RDNA 2 includes a bunch of hardware, including RX 6000 GPUs, handhelds, and Xbox Series consoles.

Why it matters: The company has taken its time for this one, but FSR 4 will indeed be a huge boost for older hardware. The biggest beneficiaries from this upgrade will be somewhat outdated devices like the Steam Deck.

In a recent update, AMD revealed that FSR, notably the very latest generation FSR 4.1, will be coming to older hardware. The RDNA 3 hardware (RX 7000) will get it in July, while RDNA 2 will receive support next year

Now, FSR 4 was a huge upgrade over 3.1 and was previously locked to Radeon RX 90 series GPUs. The tech giants will now be using the INT8 version to bring the AI upscaling to older hardware in their lineup.

Xbox Series S|X used FSR 3, so they’ll get a big performance boost. But majorly, the FSR 4.1 update will breathe new life into AMD gaming handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Legion GO, MSI Claw, and more.
