Iconic PlayStation Franchise Is Being Revived!

Story Highlight
  • A Twisted Metal reboot has been rumored for two years.
  • According to a new report, this game will be revealed soon.
  • PlayStation will use the IP for one of its ambitious live-service titles in the future.

Twisted Metal is one of PlayStation’s oldest IPs. However, like many of its biggest franchises, it has remained abandoned for over a decade, being left behind in the wake of new titles from the gaming giant.

However, rumors have suggested that Firesprite, one of PlayStation’s recently acquired studios, has been working on a Twisted Metal reboot since last year. According to a journalist, this project is not too far from an official reveal.

Why it matters: PlayStation’s lineup could use more variety, making Twisted Metal an interesting revival due to its unique gameplay compared to other first-party offerings from the gaming giant.

This information comes from Jordan Middler, a VGC journalist.

Middler asked viewers about their picks for potential PlayStation franchises that need to be revived. When Twisted Metal was mentioned, he pointed to a nearing reveal through a subtle nod.

In the past, VGC has been a reliable and accurate source of gaming news. The website has also reported on leaks ahead of time through trusted sources, leaving little room for doubt.

Job listings from Firesprite have hinted at a focus on vehicular combat in the past. Combined with reports from Jeff Grubb and other reliable insiders, they make a strong case for the developer’s involvement in this project.

PlayStation appears to be taking a live-service approach for the series, positioning Twisted Metal as one of the many multiplayer titles of this generation. As such, the game is also expected to launch on PC from day one.

Last year, PlayStation debuted a new TV show for the franchise.

This was already a strong indication that a revival was in the works, and Sony has also confirmed another season of this series. Therefore, the announcement could line up with a brand-new trailer for season 2.

Recently, we discussed major gaming franchises that PlayStation should revisit.

Apart from those IPs, Twisted Metal is a very appropriate pick for a revival. It would help PlayStation explore the vacant market of arcade combat racing games while staying true to its legacy.

The gaming giant has also confirmed that major first-party IPs will not receive new games this year. Therefore, a potential 2024 or early 2025 launch for this reboot could end up being a major deal for Sony, especially if Helldivers 2 is anything to go by.
