Sony has been under fire since the announcement of the disc cancellation. Worst of all, the company has consistently defended its decision, despite some developers and publishers now resenting the company for its digital-only future.
The biggest problem with this future is ownership issues; you don’t really own the games you pay for. Sony has once again spoken on this situation and says that “reasonable consumers” know they don’t own digital games.
Why it matters: Yes, digital sales have shot up considerably, and physical media isn’t the best for business, but Sony clearly knows that fans are concerned about ownership, so all this is very anti-consumer from the company.
In a court filing uncovered by Game File, Sony stated that it explicitly states that digital games are just a license, and nothing permanent. This filing is for a case against Sony back in June, alleging that it misled consumers.
In the digital age, it is not plausible to allege that reasonable consumers believed they were obtaining ‘ownership’ of a digital game.
The filing continues that reasonable consumers are already aware that digital games are just a license and that they don’t actually own them. PlayStation users also received an email last week reminding them of this.
Now, digital games being a license sounds right; what doesn’t is that you pay $70 for a game and suddenly wake up and find that it’s either been delisted or removed from your account. That’s the reason fans want discs to last.
