Nvidia announced DLSS 5 yesterday, debuting a technology that could change video game graphics forever. Initial reactions to this technology, however, have been largely negative, with many dubbing it an AI slop filter for games.

Many have also expressed concerns regarding the hardware cost of DLSS 5, since Nvidia’s own demo utilized two RTX 5090s. Anyhow, developers and publishers appear to be a lot more enthusiastic about the proposition of DLSS 5 and neural rendering.

Many have now become Nvidia partners and integrated DLSS 5 into their games. Among them, Bethesda has also confirmed plans to keep using DLSS 5.

Why it matters: Wide adoption of Nvidia’s latest technology is already underway, hinting at a major impact on games for the foreseeable future.

Todd Howard spoke for Bethesda and stated that the technology brings games to life. The Skyrim and Starfield director noted that DLSS 5 allows games to shine beyond the limits of traditional lighting and real-time rendering, making the entire team excited for what comes next.

With DLSS 5, the artistic style and detail shine through without being held back by the traditional limits of real-time rendering.

Elsewhere, the official Bethesda account on Twitter replied to cynicism regarding DLSS 5. It clarified that artists would have the ability to adjust the final output and tweak the image to their liking. The Twitter account also confirmed that DLSS 5 would be completely optional.

These comments suggest that this technology will be part of The Elder Scrolls 6 in some capacity when it arrives a year or two from now.
