The Witcher 4 Won’t Look or Feel Like Just Another UE5 Game, Says CDPR

CDPR To Maintain Its Distinct Style With The Witcher 4 Despite Switch To Unreal Engine 5!

Story Highlight
  • CDPR says that The Witcher 4 will differentiate itself from other Unreal Engine 5 titles.
  • The team hopes to retain its distinct style and gameplay feel with the title despite the engine switch.
  • Despite criticisms of Unreal Engine 5 titles looking similar, the technology has several distinct-looking games to its name.

With the goal of launching The Witcher 4 in 2028, CDPR is hard at work on making its upcoming game the best one yet. The team already has the title running on all target platforms, and things are looking great so far.

CDPR has also addressed concerns about The Witcher 4 losing its uniqueness as a result of the switch to Unreal Engine 5. As per the team, this will not be the case.

Why it matters: Unreal Engine 5 is currently the most popular engine in the world, with both AAA and indie teams relying on it.

Speaking to The Game Business, co-CEO Michal Nowakowski discussed the transition to Unreal Engine 5 and what it would entail for the studio.

It’s no secret that the Red Engine had a distinct feel and look, while many have argued that Unreal Engine 5 games feel a bit homogenized. As per the co-CEO, The Witcher 4 will differentiate itself from other titles based on the engine.

He says that the technology powering the game will not matter to most people. The team has worked with Epic Games and taken extra care to ensure that The Witcher 4 maintains the distinctive elements that have persisted in CDPR titles for the last few years.

We’re not going to be (another Unreal-looking game). We really are going to be able to differentiate ourselves.

The Witcher 4 Is Coming In 2 More Years

Of course, Unreal Engine 5 has already been used to make plenty of visually distinct games.

The likes of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 highlight just how varied titles based on this engine can look with tweaking and different art directions. As such, CDPR hopes that The Witcher 4 will establish its own identity in a similar manner.
