The most-anticipated gaming box of the year may be getting a big performance upgrade. Valve’s Steam Machine has been a topic of discussion among gamers for a while now, and nobody really has a clear idea of its performance. Valve has previously promised that the Steam Machine will play most games at 4K resolution and 60 FPS using AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). However, recent synthetic benchmarks did not look particularly flattering.
It now looks like the Steam Machine is getting a much-needed bump, with support for AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology. AMD has recently expanded support for FSR 4 by including older GPUs, and now Valve’s upcoming gaming box is in the mix as well. A DLL file was added to Steam that is coming to Proton Experimental and will likely allow Steam Machine/SteamOS users to employ FSR 4 technology in supported games.
Valve just added the version of AMD’s FSR4 that was announced last month and adds support to older GPUs rather than just RDNA4

Proton is the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on SteamOS and other Linux distros. With this new upgrade, Valve has added custom DLL files to it that are linked to AMD’s FSR 4. This suggests that FSR 4 is most likely being prepared for the Steam Machine, which has an RDNA 3-based GPU. It is important to note that AMD has previously confirmed that FSR 4.1 support is coming to older RDNA 3 GPUs sometime in July.

The long and short of it is that the Steam Machine is gearing up to support FSR 4, which is fantastic news for gamers. Recent Geekbench scores did little to instill confidence in the Steam Machine’s gaming performance, and gamers were rather disappointed by its low CPU benchmark score. However, with the added boost from FSR 4, the Steam Machine will most likely hit Valve’s 4K 60 FPS target in most supported games.

Moreover, FSR 4 will bring a noticeable improvement to image quality over FSR 3, which was previously confirmed to be part of the Steam Machine’s arsenal. It might even deliver a crisper, more detailed image than the basic super-resolution feature currently implemented on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.
Steam Deck owners, on the other hand, should be prepared for disappointment. It looks like FSR 4 is not coming to RDNA 2 GPUs anytime soon, and that is what the Steam Deck has. For the Steam Machine, however, this is massive news and may be the ace up Valve’s sleeve that it needed to stamp its authority on the home console market. However, pricing remains a big unknown, and it all depends on that dollar figure.
