Valve Confirms Steam Machine Won’t Have Any Exclusives As They Restrict the Players

"Restricting Where People can Play a Game I Don’t Think Is a Great Model"

Story Highlight
  • Valve says they don’t support the model of restricting players to a single device.
  • They won’t be doing any exclusives, as they don’t believe it’s a good idea for them.
  • They state that they’re treating the whole Steam library as their exclusives.

The Steam Machine has been a big topic of debate. On one hand, it is truly impressive how Valve has fit a complete PC into a tiny package, but on the other hand, the $1,000+ price tag is a huge letdown due to the insane memory prices

The device works majorly like a console and is intended for couch gaming; however, it won’t be adopting one specific console thing. Valve has confirmed that Steam Machine won’t have any exclusive games at all.

Why it matters: The company has always been very customer-friendly, and they don’t want the players to be restricted to a single device. They want the whole library of Steam games to be available to all players.

Valve has confirmed that the Steam Machine isn’t getting any exclusives

Speaking to Bloomberg, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained why the company isn’t interested in doing any exclusives. He said restricting players to a single device isn’t a great model and they don’t support it.

Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us. We’re much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive.

So, instead of launching a few exclusive games, in a way the entire Steam library is Steam Machine exclusive. In this way, players can pick a game and continue it on whatever device they prefer to play it on without getting locked out.

There were some rumors that Half Life 3 might be a Steam Machine exclusive, but that too seems highly unlikely now. But this is a great thing for the players, as the whole Steam library will be available for all regardless of the hardware.
