Steam Frame Could Cost A Whopping $1500 At Release, Hints Insider

Steam Frame's Price Could Lead To Instant Failure For Valve!

Story Highlight
  • An insider claims Steam Frame could reach $1,500 at launch following the Steam Machine’s debut.
  • It is said that Qualcomm’s recent decision to increase prices for its chips has had an impact on Valve’s hardware.
  • This price could make the VR headset completely redundant at release.

Valve has struggled with memory shortages and rising prices more than most. Between the Steam Machine’s MSRP and the Steam Deck’s price hike, the gaming giant’s recent hardware efforts have seemingly gone to waste.

Unfortunately, the bad news might not end here. A new report suggests the Steam Frame will continue the trend of overpriced Valve hardware.

Why it matters: Valve announced the Steam Frame alongside the Steam Machine, hoping to appeal to VR gamers. However, at the rumored launch price, most people might simply ignore the hardware altogether.

During a recent livestream (via Reddit), Valve insider Tyler McVicker speculated that the Steam Frame could touch $1,500 at release.

The insider discussed the fact that he previously predicted a price of $1,100 at launch. However, he now thinks this price may have been too generous an estimate. This estimate is interesting since the most expensive Steam Machine already costs around $1,500.

Tyler McVicker also pointed to Qualcomm’s recent price increase announcement, which directly impacts the Steam Frame, since the VR headset relies on a chip manufactured by Qualcomm.

Even with support for Steam’s extensive VR library and first-party titles like Half-Life Alyx, this steep a price may be too hard to justify for the biggest VR enthusiasts. For context, PlayStation’s attempt at capturing the VR market with the PS VR2 advertised a $550 MSRP, less than half of the rumored Steam Frame cost.

The Steam Frame Could Be DOA

Of course, Valve has yet to reveal an official price for the hardware, but the company’s last release does suggest that the insider’s prediction will likely come to fruition.

Do you think the Steam Frame will be worth buying at $1,500 or more? Let’s discuss in the comments below.
