- Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have now reached a massive $1 billion in crowdfunding.
- The title was first announced over 14 years ago, with an aim of $500,000 in funding.
- Despite the $1 billion mark and development time, the release window still isn’t clear.
Star Citizen was announced back in 2012 as a crowd-funded project with a modest goal of around $500,000. The game peeked interest of a lot more people than the studio expected, and 14 years in, it’s still adding more funds.
Cloud Imperium Games has officially revealed that Star Citizen has now hit a milestone of over $1 billion in crowdfunding, and we can verify the claim using the official tracker as well. However, the release is still a mystery.
Why it matters: This officially makes the title a billion-dollar project, which is huge, especially based on the fact that the studio didn’t aim for it to be that huge initially. But it has grown into a monstrous size over the years.

Talking to Variety, studio chief Chris Roberts confirmed Star Citizen reaching a billion dollars, and also revealed that its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is set to enter its final stages, and the release is close.
The game kicked off its crowdfunding campaign in 2012 with a prototype. Fans loved it, and it set a 2014 release date. 12 years later, it is pretty much playable now, but a full release still doesn’t seem to be on the cards yet.

Roberts did talk about Squadron 42, saying that they developed it in a cinematic way, where you will feel like a part of a movie, rather than playing a game. Fortunately, it is edging closer to release.
It is unlikely we will see it launch this year, as it is already a largely filled year, especially the latter half, where we have GTA 6, Fable, Wolverine, and more. So, the closest it could launch is somewhere, maybe in 2027.
