Huge Win For Insomniac's Work On Spider-Man!

Story Highlight
  • Spider-Man Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton says Insomniac’s games inspired the film’s action.
  • The series served as a key reference for various stunts.
  • The movie’s July 31st release could also lead to more interest in the games.

Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series has become one of PlayStation’s most important first-party franchises. The series’ latest entry, Spider-Man 2, also remains the studio’s highest-rated entry to date.

Continuing its success, the series’ influence is now reaching the big screen. It is said that the PlayStation games were a major source of inspiration for Spider-Man Brand New Day.

Why it matters: Many consider Insomniac’s work on the IP the pinnacle of modern superhero titles. The studio is also quite famous for its dedication to the character himself.

In an interview with Polygon, Cretton described Insomniac’s games as a “great inspiration” for certain stunts featured in Spider-Man Brand New Day. This is quite fitting since the games go above and beyond to capture Spider-Man’s mannerisms in all aspects, including his web swinging, acrobatics, combat, etc.

Interestingly, director Destin Daniel Cretton admitted that he isn’t too big of a gamer himself. Despite his lack of experience with the industry, he seems to have a particular fondness for Insomniac Games’ work.

I am not a gamer, but I’ve played the game. A lot of people in our stunt department loved playing those games. They would do screen grabs and say like, “Can we pull this move off?”

With Spider-Man Brand New Day set to arrive in just a few more days, the film could also lead to renewed interest in the three Insomniac Spider-Man titles. In doing so, both the games and film could benefit each other.

Insomniac is said to be working on Spider-Man 3 at the moment. A Venom DLC is also rumored to be in development, but the team has yet to officially comment on the future of the IP.

Which elements from the PlayStation games would you like to see translated into the movie?
