There were several rumors going on about Sony acquiring Kadokawa the previous year. For various reasons, many fans were concerned about FromSoftware falling into Sony’s leadership. 

While the gaming giant hasn’t acquired the company, it has acquired a lot of shares. In December 2024, Sony decided to buy a 10% stake in FromSoftware’s parent company for $331.2 million. 

As of 7th January, the payment has been completed, and Sony has now become the company’s largest shareholder

Why it matters: Fans are concerned that Sony, the major shareholder of Kadokawa, might put some restrictions on how FromSoftware operates. Such a massive change in the company is likely to bring some changes.

Kadokawa Has Issued A New Statement Revealing That Sony Has Officially Become Its Biggest Shareholder

The company has just recently issued an official statement revealing that the payment was completed today and that Sony is its largest major shareholder now, with 10.11% of shares.

KADOKAWA CORPORATION hereby announces that payment was completed today with respect to the issuance of new shares to Sony Group Corporation by way of a third-party allotment, regarding which the Board of Directors of the Company made a resolution at a meeting held on December 19, 2024, and in conjunction with the Third-Party Allotment, the Company’s major shareholders and largest major shareholder has been changed.

As per the official statement, 12,054,100 shares of common stock will be issued as new shares. These are the shares that Sony now holds, making it the biggest shareholder in the company.

FromSoftware Fans Are Concerned Over The Recent Acquisition

Fans have been concerned, but this could be a good thing as FromSoftware can finally get the rights to Bloodborne and develop the much-requested PC port or add 60FPS to the game.
