Resident Evil Franchise Is Unstoppable!

Story Highlight
  • The Resident Evil series has been around for 28 years.
  • In nearly three decades, Capcom has sold 154 million units of this IP.
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake is on its way to becoming the best-selling game of the series.

Resident Evil has proven to be Capcom’s biggest success in recent years despite going through a rough phase during the PS3/Xbox 360 console generation.

Having developed a reputation for masterful atmosphere, revolutionary gameplay, and a distinct experience, even games like the 26-year-old Resident Evil 2 remain iconic parts of the series.

Thanks to a consistent output of modern releases that live up to this reputation, Capcom now confirms the franchise has sold 154 million units.

Why it matters: Capcom’s recent efforts highlight the importance of this series, placing it above every other IP owned by the publisher.

Capcom has many other iconic franchises like Street Fighter, Mega Man, and Devil May Cry. However, the Resident Evil franchise takes the throne for being the biggest among them.

The publisher has revealed the updated sales figures for its game on the official website. With Resident Evil being at the top, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter come in second and third place, respectively.

The Monster Hunter franchise has sold 97 million copies, while the Street Fighter franchise has sold 53 million units. Resident Evil sales saw a major surge in 2023, mostly thanks to last year’s remake.

It should be noted that these figures only account for sales until December 2023. Previously, Capcom confirmed 146 million sales for the IP by March 2023. Therefore, in just nine months, an additional 8 million copies have been sold.

The Resident Evil 4 Remake isn’t the only game contributing to the sales. However, it has sold nearly 6.5 million units, being the biggest reason for this rapid growth.

This remake was also nominated for Game of The Year in 2023. While there was no doubt about its excellence, this nomination sparked debates about remakes and whether they should be part of such discussions.

With this progress, the future of Resident Evil is looking promising. Capcom has reportedly begun development on five different titles, including remakes and new entries. Also, it is worth noting that Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake are now part of Xbox Game Pass.
