PS5 Is PlayStation’s Most Profitable Generation To Date Despite Just 13 Exclusive Releases

Are Exclusives Not As Big of A Deal As They Are Made Out to Be?

Story Highlight
  • The PS5 is Sony’s most profitable console generation despite the fewest exclusives.
  • The console only has 13 exclusives so far compared to PS4’s 58, and PS3’s 108.
  • This shows that lack of exclusives isn’t as big of a turn-off as it is made out to be.

The current PlayStation generation has been plagued by issues ever since it began. At first, it faced shortages due to the ongoing pandemic, and now it is facing extremely high prices, but despite everything, this generation seems to be flourishing.

PS5 is the most profitable PlayStation generation to date despite only 13 exclusives being released in this generation. For context, the PS4 generation had 58 exclusives, and the PS3 had a whopping 108, signalling how far behind PS5 is.

Why it matters: The PS5 is now tracking to sell 100 million units, and there are still a couple of years left for this generation. Despite the lack of exclusives, the generation is prominently ahead of the previous ones.

PS5 is the most profitable generation despite a lack of many exclusives

Sony revealed in its financial report that PS5 has generated $136 billion, while PS4 made $107 billion, and PS3 made even less. The operating income is also quite ahead, so this generation has been the most successful.

This suggests that while lack of exclusives is a talking point, this isn’t something that matters too much for the fans. They want them, but they are not restricted from buying a console only if they don’t have enough exclusives.

The console is nearing 100 million units sold

A chunk of this generation’s success owes to the downfall of Xbox. The Series X|S consoles have been a major flop, and this has led to the PS5 becoming the definitive console for all, leading to very high profitability for Sony.
