PS5 Boasts 50 Million Sales Milestone After 3 Years

Almost Matching Rate of PS4 Sales!

Story Highlights
  • The PS5 came out in 2020 and quickly became the console to buy this generation.
  • In 2023 alone, it reportedly sold over 22.5 million units.
  • This new achievement means that the PS5 was just one week behind its predecessor in the race to achieve 50 million sales.

The PS5 has lived up to Sony’s legacy in the console gaming industry. Providing compelling exclusives, a robust library of third-party games, and offerings like an evolving subscription service, the PlayStation ecosystem offers everything console gamers need.

Owing to these features, the console has surpassed a new sales milestone as Sony confirms that it has sold 50 million units worldwide.

Why it matters: PlayStation has practically eliminated Xbox from the hardware competition with such results. Month after month, it outsells the Series S|X despite the recent wave of hefty discounts on the Xbox consoles.

Sony PS5 PlayStation 5

Sony has confidently announced the figures, thanking fans for their support on the road to 50 million sales. Reflecting on the sales figures, soon-to-retire CEO Jim Ryan said:

“Achieving this sales milestone is a testament to the support of the global PlayStation community.”

As per the statistics, the console is still lagging behind the PS4. Compared to its predecessor, the PS5 is behind in sales by a week but is quickly making up ground.

In July, the console was lagging two months behind the PS4 when Sony confirmed 40 million sales. Therefore, 2023 has been magnificent for Sony and its hardware sales.

This year has also marked a major shift in current-generation games. Most studios left last-generation hardware behind, resulting in games like Alan Wake 2 and Spider-Man 2, with both pushing the new hardware in unique ways.

Such releases meant that the PS5 sold around 22.5 million units this year, with a boost of 65 percent in sales. This is a stark contrast compared to the results of the Xbox Series S|X.

In addition to this milestone, Sony recently announced that the PS5 library had grown to over 2500 games. Among these, the likes of Spider-Man 2 and Demon’s Souls add to the exciting list of exclusives.

PlayStation PS5 Pro

2024 will mark another promising year for PlayStation. Sony is expected to launch the PS5 Pro in 2024, reclaiming the mantle of the world’s most powerful console from the Xbox Series X.

If the launch is accompanied by a price drop for the base model, it will result in even better sales, eventually allowing the console to outpace the PS4.

With games like GTA 6 closer than ever, we expect the PS5 to receive a major boost in sales.

If Sony secures a marketing deal and provides bundles for the game, it should be able to convince an even larger part of the market to choose PlayStation over the competition.
