Halo has now been handed over to Activision Blizzard, and the gaming giant is plotting an entirely new course for the IP.

Many have been left baffled by this decision, but insider reports reveal why Xbox ultimately decided to cancel all of Halo Studios. It is said that the team’s next big project was still years away.

Why it matters: Halo Studios was one of Xbox’s biggest first-party teams, but the developer has now been reduced to fewer than 20 developers.

As per insider Tom Warren, the developer’s next game was still years away from release before the recent cancellation. Therefore, the unannounced Halo project was not even close to nearing launch. 

Elsewhere, a report from Rebs Gaming reveals that the team had multiple games in early development. This included Halo 2 and 3 remakes and Halo 7, but neither of these games was in the production phase.

The fact that the team last released Halo Infinite in 2021 and shipped only a remake of the original Combat Evolved without multiplayer since then makes this all the more surprising. 

As the report puts it, Halo 7 was presented to Xbox as a concept right before the layoffs, but the gaming giant ultimately decided to hand over the series to Activision.

Moving forward, many have a lot of expectations for Halo under Activision Blizzard. It’s no secret that the IP has been grossly mismanaged over the years, so fans hope to see it return to form in the coming years.
