Following a return to Destiny and a major shift in priorities for Marathon, it’s clear that Bungie’s latest extraction shooter has failed to perform well. As a result, Bungie is now making huge changes to the core gameplay experience in an attempt to win back players. The studio has also discussed why it thinks things turned out as they did, blaming the extraction shooter’s steep learning curve. Why it matters: Marathon has become famous for losing players at an incredible pace, so it will be interesting to see whether the game will be able to make a true comeback. In a recent video discussing the game’s future, Bungie admitted that Marathon did not land with players because the game was too difficult and narrow for a large audience. The studio made similar points in its official Marathon update, where it said player feedback showed the game needed major changes before release. According to Bungie, feedback showed that Marathon’s survival gameplay was too hard to read and too demanding for many players. The studio said it is now focusing on more deliberate pacing and clearer onboarding. As per design lead Kevin Yanes, the game’s launch didn’t go the way the team wanted it to. Director Del Chafe III also admitted that the game’s PVP attracted a very niche and competitive audience. One of the things we learned at launch is that our game is pretty niche. We all thought we were going to bring extraction to the masses and we didn’t. Players are now waiting to see whether Bungie will be able to turn things around for Marathon. The studio seems to have understood what it needs to do, so it will be interesting to see whether the coming updates will be effective. What do you hope to see in Marathon in the future? Thank you!
