PS5 Reaches New Milestone With 40 Million Units Sold

The PS5 has been on a good run, becoming one of the most successful consoles by Sony. Following its release in 2020, Sony has recently announced that the PS5 has sold over 40 million units.

Why it matters: This is a massive achievement for the console and highlights PlayStation’s current momentum in the market. It also means PlayStation has a massive advantage over Xbox.

While the console struggled in sales during the pandemic, the sales in the recent year have more than made up for it. For reference, the console had only sold 10 million units since its release from 2020 until July 2021.

Sony’s PS5 performed incredibly well in 2023 after the SIE CEO announced that the console shortage was over and it would be available in retail stores. The console also broke an all-time sales record for PlayStation in February, selling more than 500K units in a month.

The last time the company announced its unit sales was in April when it revealed that PlayStation had crossed the 38.4 million sales mark. Therefore, an additional 1.6 million units have been sold in four months.

In comparison, the Xbox Series X|S reached a milestone of 21 million units as of July 2023. As such, PlayStation has a massive lead, with nearly twice as many consoles sold.

PS5 sales will likely continue to rise from here as the gaming giant reportedly has two more variants to be released. The slim console, which reportedly features a detachable disc, could be announced next month, and the Pro variant is rumored to launch in late 2024.
