Sony Trying Free DLC Approach With Spider-Man!

Story Highlights
  • Spider-Man 2 is the latest release from Insomniac Games.
  • A recent leak has suggested that the game will receive three free DLCs next year.
  • The developers have also planned to release a Game of the Year edition next year.

Yesterday, we saw one of the most significant leaks in the gaming industry. Over 1TB of data from Insomniac Games was released, revealing all of their future deals and the roadmap of their upcoming titles.

The plans for the recently released Spider-Man 2 have also seemingly leaked, and it appears that the developers are hoping to release various DLCs next year in addition to a Game of the Year edition before the end of 2024.

Why it matters: Spider-Man 2 sold 2.5 million units on day one. This not only makes it Insomniac Games’ biggest title but also PlayStation’s biggest first-party launch, incentivizing the company to support it with post-launch content.

A Resetera user has shared one of the leaked images from the data, showing the developer’s content strategy for Spider-Man 2.

As per the slide, the developers have planned 3 DLCs for next year. The first one is named Beetle Infestation, which is arriving in the first quarter of 2024, so it’s likely to drop between January and March.

The second one, Extreme Carnage, will be released in the second quarter of 2024. This will be followed by Spider-Verse Anomaly, planned to be released during the Holiday season next year.

While these are already interesting, another user has shared a more detailed slide of the leaks, which reveals what fans can expect from the coming DLCs. The first two DLCs will contain open-world missions and boss fights.

However, the third DLC, Spider-Verse Anomaly, is a crossover with Sony Pictures and includes a Spider-Verse mission, visual filter, and villains from the Spider-Verse movie.

While all of the DLCs will be free, the schedule may change after the recent leaks.

Other than the DLCs, the developers will continue to release regular updates for the game, which will offer free suits and other activities. By the end of the year, a complete edition bundling all the content will be made available like the past game.

With Spider-Man 2 costing $315 million, the developers expected 10 million sales for the release. Alongside discounts, such content and bundles will be essential to achieving this goal in the future.

Spider-Man 2 will also be followed by a Venom spin-off. This standalone game will continue the expanding narrative of Insomniac Games’ overarching Spider-Man gaming universe, leading into the next mainline release.
