PS5 Disc Edition Buyers Beware!

Story Highlight
  • Last month, Sony confirmed its end of physical games support starting from 2028.
  • Disc-based PS5 consoles now include a warning about physical PlayStation games ending in 2028.
  • This warning cements the decision and also hints that the PS5 will be supported beyond 2028.

PlayStation’s shift away from physical discs has shown no signs of slowing down, and with fans seemingly losing interest in the battle, a digital-only future for the industry seems all but confirmed.

Sony also appears to be setting plans in motion for this shift now, offering a warning for new PS5 buyers.

Why it matters: PlayStation is taking small, calculated steps to ease the masses into the all-digital transition, and this warning serves as one step that prepares people for the end of physical PS5 games.

As reported by Behind The Game on Twitter/X, Sony appears to be making its move away from physical PlayStation games more visible at retail.

It is said that disc-based PS5 consoles now include messaging that warns buyers about the upcoming end of physical releases from PlayStation in January 2028. This is interesting since the sticker appears to be a last-minute addition.

Moreover, this disclaimer suggests PlayStation has plans to support the PS5 beyond 2028. For context, the PS6 is expected to launch in 2028, but the two consoles will likely coexist due to an extended cross-gen period.

The death of physical media means many of these countries without PlayStation Store access will be locked out of buying PS6 games via official means.
The physical games sector has been declining for 17 years now.

PlayStation’s disclaimer clearly aims to inform the masses of this decision. The gaming giant may even be attempting to push newer customers onto the PS5 Digital Edition with this disclaimer, since it has more to gain from digital purchases and the market has already shifted toward digital games.

What do you think of Sony’s 2028 physical game cutoff? Let’s discuss below.
