Another Live-Service Failure In The Making?

Story Highlight
  • Fairgames recently pivoted to an extraction shooter focus and held a private playtest.
  • This playtest shows the title takes inspiration from Call of Duty and The Division.
  • A report also reveals that many players found the playtest boring and criticized its various elements.

PlayStation’s big live-service bets continue with Fairgames. Following Concord’s failure, the gaming giant is being more cautious with its approach to Games as a Service, but it appears it is still struggling to find a precise recipe for success.

According to the latest reports, Fairgames’ latest playtest has not been successful at all.

Why it matters: Recent reports revealed that Fairgames had pivoted to an extraction shooter focus, confirming that PlayStation was preparing to conduct a playtest for the title.

As reported by Insider Gaming, gameplay from the latest playtest appears to be a mix between The Division and Call of Duty. The game is also said to be going for a more grounded look compared to its reveal trailer.

The report reveals that players have shown plenty of negativity for this playtest on Discord. Major points of criticism revolve around the movement, class system, and more. Moreover, it has been said that many players complained about teammates leaving mid-match.

Some even confirmed they stopped playing altogether after a few games, suggesting that Fairgames completely failed in the player retention aspect that is so crucial to nail for a live-service project.

Because Marathon has shown how PlayStation’s extraction shooters aren’t guaranteed to be major hits, the negative feedback from this playtest sets a dangerous precedent for Fairgames.

There is no telling whether the game will end up succeeding or failing, but this report certainly raises a few eyebrows.

Elsewhere, it is said that even an IP like Halo is pursuing the extraction shooter model, signifying that this may be the next trend the industry chases in the coming years.
