Huge Blow To Second-Hand Games Market!

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation’s disc strategy threatens a second-hand games market valued at more than $7 billion.
  • Analysts believe Sony is prioritizing higher software revenue and tighter control over purchases.
  • Used-game retailers and players could lose out as PlayStation shifts more customers toward digital ownership.

Sony’s latest PlayStation strategy has already sparked concerns over physical media and game preservation. With digital sales generating stronger margins for platform holders, the gaming giant appears increasingly willing to reduce its reliance on traditional discs.

According to a new report, Sony’s disc-related decisions could shrink a global second-hand games market worth more than $7 billion.

Why it matters: Second-hand sales give players cheaper access to games while allowing physical owners to recover part of their spending. A reduced resale market would place more pricing control in Sony and its publisher partners’ hands.

PlayStation physical media
An alternative like physical games is important because of incentives like these.

As per CNBC’s report, the used games market won’t disappear overnight following PlayStation’s exit. Analysts note that Nintendo Switch games and retro titles will continue to be in circulation, but PlayStation’s decision will leave a gradual impact.

It is said that the lack of new games circulating in the market will lead to a slow decline and eventual death of used games. This market is reportedly worth over $7 billion today and may reach as high as $13.8 billion in value by 2034

However, with the PS6 generation expected to leave disc games behind, the market may rapidly lose momentum afterwards. As popular analyst Michael Pachter points out, used games also help audiences pay for new games, making them an important part of the industry.

Analysts quoted in the report completely disagree with PlayStation’s decision, calling it an anti-consumer approach.

Many Gamers Have Massive Physical Disc Collections

It is said that PlayStation is looking merely at profits for now, caring little about the long-term implications of its decision. The gaming giant even appears to be using bots to promote its announcement on social media.
