Ex-Dragon Age Writer Calls Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 “The Baldur’s Gate 3 of JRPGs”

Story Highlight
  • Former BioWare developer credited for making the Dragon Age setting has some nice words to say about Clair Obscur Expedition 33.
  • The writer praised the game’s storytelling and compared it to the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 in the CRPG genre.
  • The game has already secured a movie deal, with potential DLCs and sequels in the future, following this success.

Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 has taken over the gaming world with users and critics alike praising the title as one of the best JRPGs to date.

Beyond that, other gaming developers also have nice words to say about the game. A former BioWare developer shared his thoughts on the title, calling it groundbreaking for the JRPG genre.

Why it matters: Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 has been performing better than most releases of 2025, despite being Sandfall Interactive’s debut release. It goes to show that good games don’t need a mind-blowing budget; they need to be good at their core.

I've been playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and wow… so far, it's kind of to JRPG's what Baldur's Gate 3 was to CRPG's. It's beautiful and polished and well-written, and the turn-based combat is so fun!Though I cannot believe I *just* discovered what you need Lumina points for. 😅

David Gaider (@davidgaider.bsky.social) 2025-04-29T11:11:52.564Z

David Gaider is best known for his work on the earlier Dragon Age games and is credited for creating the franchise’s setting. According to him, Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 is to JRPGs what Baldur’s Gate 3 was to CRPGs.

It’s beautiful and polished and well-written, and the turn-based combat is so fun!

Moreover, Gaider also replied to a fan under the thread who discussed the heartbreaking narrative of the game, further complimenting the game’s storytelling and saying that it’s the best way to do it, and “For the lows to have meaning, you need the highs.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Has A Near-Perfect User Score On Metacritic

The writer’s comparison to Baldur’s Gate 3 is a respectable one since the CRPG has redefined the entire genre. Additionally, it is also a solid example that turn-based combat can be successful, despite many doubting its potential.

Building on this success, Sandfall Interactive has effectively secured DLC and sequels for the game, and a movie has already been licensed just a few days after its launch.

Wuchang: Fallen Fathers is among Steam Top Sellers already

New Titanfall Game Cancelled Mid Development Following Respawn Layoffs

Story Highlight
  • As per new reports, Respawn was working on the early development of a Titanfall extraction shooter.
  • EA’s recent round of layoffs has led to the cancellation of this project.
  • The publisher has let go of 300-400 developers, nearly 100 of whom are from Respawn Entertainment.

EA is no stranger to layoffs, and every time the gaming giant cuts jobs, Respawn Entertainment appears to bear the brunt of the cuts more than other teams. Last year, the team faced various layoffs and saw the cancellation of a Star Wars Mandalorian project.

New reports reveal that Respawn Entertainment has been hit hard by layoffs yet again, and one of the cancelled projects included a new Titanfall game.

Why it matters: Fans have been calling for a Titanfall revival for the longest time, so this news is heartbreaking for both the studio and its fans.

Titanfall 3 Mandalorian
Two Major Games From The Studio Have Now Been Cancelled

As reported by Bloomberg, the latest round of job cuts saw a total of 300-400 layoffs at EA. Nearly 100 of the layoffs impacted the Apex Legends studio, resulting in multiple game cancellations.

Although the initial report did not mention Titanfall, sources reveal that the team was working on a Titanfall extraction shooter. This also aligns with recent rumors of a new Titanfall game being in development.

The project was codenamed R7 and abandoned fairly early in development. EA states that the studio will continue to move forward with the development of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi games, effectively killing any hopes of the sci-fi shooter franchise returning anytime soon.

As extraction shooters are gaining more mainstream attention today, Respawn Entertainment’s spin on the genre could have led to a major surge in popularity for the developer.

Respawn Entertainment Is The Latest Victim of Layoffs And Project Cancelations

Between the demand for more Titanfall and the desire for unique first-person shooter gameplay, the studio could have capitalized on a major gap in the market. Unfortunately, the team continues to face layoffs year after year.

What are your thoughts on the Titanfall project’s cancellation? Let us know in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

EA Cancels Multiple Respawn Games And Lays Off More Devs

Story Highlight
  • EA cancels two projects within Respawn Entertainment.
  • The developer studio was also hit with a layoff across the Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi teams.
  • They now plan to focus solely on Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi franchises.

Update: IGN has just provided additional information to this report. According to them, roughly 100 developers within Respawn Entertainment were affected by this restructuring. This includes a mix of developers, QA testers, and publishing all across Respawn Entertainment. Some workers have now been moved to other EA teams, such as Battlefield and Iron Man.

The Original Report Follows:

Currently, only a handful of studios under EA are keeping the publisher alive, and among them is Respawn Entertainment, known for their work on the Titanfall and Star Wars Jedi franchise.

While the studio holds great potential, it’s unfortunate that EA doesn’t recognize it, as Respawn Entertainment is the latest victim of another wave of layoffs. Moreover, two unannounced projects from the studio are now canceled, as they have decided to shift their focus solely to Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.

Why it matters: Layoffs have become a growing concern within the gaming industry. For such a prospering studio, cutting down the workforce isn’t a good sign.

Respawn Entertainment Announcing Layoffs And Project Cancelations || Via: X

In their latest social media post, Respawn announced this news. According to the post, the canceled projects were still in incubation, but nevertheless, it’s unfortunate to see this happen.

While the studio hasn’t revealed which projects they were working on, Titanfall 3 is one of them that comes to mind. The title has been rumored to be in development for quite some time now.

The studio recently canceled yet another project around last month. However, it wasn’t made official, so it was likely a part of the project mentioned above.

Analyst Predicts Huge Wave Of Layoffs And Project Cancelations This Year

Respawn has also laid off developers working on Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi game, thanked them for their contributions, and is offering them meaningful support.

Moving forward, the developer will double down on its competitive focus for Apex Legends, which is also reported to get a 2.0 update, completely revamping the game.

Additionally, a new Star Wars Jedi game is being developed and is set to “raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay.”

Chances For Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 DLC Or Sequel Are “Good” Thanks To Fan Reception

Story Highlight
  • Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the writer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has stated that there is a good chance fans will get a sequel or DLC.
  • The team always wanted to do more in the universe if fans demanded it.
  • And considering the near-perfect fan reception, a sequel or DLC is all but confirmed.

2025 has been the year of RPGs, with titles like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Oblivion Remastered, and now Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 taking over the gaming world with universal praise from critics and fans. Oblivion Remastered, for instance, crossed 4 million players in no time and smashed the Steam concurrent users stat.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is following in similar footsteps, with the game attaining over 115k concurrent users on Steam and becoming one of the best-selling titles on the platform despite competition. And, to no one’s surprise, there is now a heavy chance fans will get to see more of the IP.

Why This Matters: A turn-based RPG like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 succeeding and spawning a franchise is good for variety in the genre.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 writer
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 writer thinks a sequel or DLC is almost a certainty.

While replying to a fan’s messages regarding the game’s success, the lead writer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, said that there is now a good chance a DLC or sequel of the RPG will enter production.

In the Instagram messages, the writer revealed that the team has always said there will be more content from the game’s universe if there is a strong desire from fans. And, from what Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s reception has been so far, there is every chance we’ll see a sequel or DLC very soon.

Considering how the RPG is developer Sandfall Interactive’s first project, it will be more surprising if the team decides to do nothing with such a successful IP. In just 3 days, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold a whopping million copies around the globe, and that was despite being available on the Xbox Game Pass.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is winning hearts all across the globe.

Furthermore, the RPG has a near-perfect score on Metacritic, becoming one of the highest-rated titles of 2025 so far. Hence, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen is definitely going to be busy writing new content for the Clair Obscur universe.

Nintendo Reportedly Just Makes $4 On Each Switch 2 Unit Sold

Story Highlight
  • A new rumor has suggested that Nintendo is selling the Switch 2 for way less profit.
  • Nintendo Prime, a content creator, has revealed that the company only makes $4 profit on each console sold.
  • This isn’t surprising, given that in the console market, companies typically don’t make a profit from the hardware initially.

A detailed presentation on the Nintendo Switch 2 was held on April 2, 2025, revealing several key details. The fandom didn’t particularly like the price tag, especially given that the gaming giant had priced a game at $80.

However, it seems like Nintendo isn’t making that much profit from its latest handheld, even after pricing it at $450. As per a rumor the gaming giant is making only $4 on each unit sold, which is way too less, but this is how it works in the console market, so not that surprising.

Why it matters: For a long time, the gaming giants in the console market didn’t generate profits from the actual console. Instead, they made profits by selling video games for that specific console. However, the PlayStation 5 is now profitable as hardware production costs decrease over time.

Nintendo Switch 2 Profit
A content creator claims that the Switch 2 isn’t profitable.

A content creator, Nintendo Prime, recently stated on Twitter that Nintendo only makes $4 on every Switch 2 unit sold. So, the cost to make almost matches what the gaming giant is selling it for, which seems pretty fair.

Double Jump Games, who is getting 9 Switch 2 Units to sell, noticed in the order that Nintendo is basically making nothing in the US per unit. They make $4 per unit sold, Nintendo’s costs basically match what it costs to be here. So next to no profit margin.

He further said in the comments: “(The $4 is the retail profit. Nintendo is selling at cost and make nothing).” This is not surprising, given that it is how a console business typically operates at the outset. Some even take a loss per console, so getting $4 profit may be better in this scenario.

Eventually, with time, the hardware will become less expensive to manufacture, and the handheld will be more profitable. That said, the gaming giant earns a hefty amount from the games, so it won’t have any problem with the lower profit from the handheld, at least for now.

This is merely a rumor from a content creator, so we recommend taking it with a large grain of salt.

What do you think about the possibility that the Switch 2 generates only $4 in profit for the company for every unit sold? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the official Tech4Gamers forums for discussion.

Cyberpunk 2077 On Switch 2 Is “Best Way To Play It On The Go” Says CDPR

Story Highlight
  • CDPR has praised the Cyberpunk 2077 experience on the Nintendo Switch 2 yet again.
  • Due to features like the Joy-Con controllers and more, the team is confident that the handheld gameplay is the best it has ever been.
  • The studio even puts the Nintendo Switch 2 above handhelds like the Steam Deck and Rog Ally.

Cyberpunk 2077 is heading to the Nintendo Switch 2, and CDPR is completely dedicated to making this version of the game as great as possible. Thanks to the new graphical capabilities of the console and more modern architecture, the RPG is expected to play better than its last-gen PS4 and Xbox One counterparts.

CDPR has also praised the Nintendo Switch 2 over other handhelds, dubbing it the best place to play Cyberpunk 2077 on the go.

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch 2 offers modest hardware compared to the best handhelds on the market, making CDPR’s thoughts on the console quite interesting.

In a new video detailing the Cyberpunk 2077 experience on the Nintendo Switch 2, CDPR pointed to the console’s unique strengths.

These include the new Joy-Con controllers, the VRR LCD, and more, resulting in a solid experience for anyone who wishes to play the RPG without being constrained to a single place.

According to Charles Tremblay, VP of Technology at CDPR, the Nintendo Switch 2 is ideal for those interested in playing Cyberpunk 2077 in handheld mode.

I do think it’s the best way to play the game on the go.

This comment is interesting because handhelds like the Rog Ally and Steam Deck offer more raw hardware power on paper. However, because of key optimizations made for the Nintendo hardware, the team is confident this version will outshine other handheld experiences.

Nintendo Switch 2
The New Hardware Has Received Plenty of Praise From The Industry So Far

For context, Cyberpunk 2077 on the Rog Ally can target 60FPS in handheld mode across various resolutions depending on the settings. The Nintendo Switch 2, on the other hand, offers a lower frame rate target, but CDPR’s optimizations mean that the experience is more stable overall.

More comparisons of the handheld Cyberpunk 2077 experience should be available once the Nintendo Switch 2 launches in June, so fans won’t be waiting too long to delve further into the smaller differences between each version.

What are your thoughts on the team’s statement? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

GTA 6 Doesn’t Need More Trailers; ‘Element of Surprise’ Will Make It Better, Says Ex-Rockstar Dev

Story Highlight
  • A former Rockstar developer says GTA 6 doesn’t need additional trailers.
  • According to him, the ‘element of surprise’ will make the release a bigger event.
  • GTA 6 is expected to receive a shorter marketing window.

For what felt like an eternity, GTA 6 is finally coming out this year and is just mere months away from launch.

It’s been 500 days since the first and only trailer for GTA 6 dropped, with no further information on the title. While fans expect a gameplay trailer soon, a former Rockstar developer suggests otherwise, saying the game would be better off without one.

Why it matters: GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated launch in the history of gaming. The title deserves a proper rollout for release, especially for the fans who have waited patiently for over a decade.

Former Rockstar Dev Suggesting A Marketing Strategy For GTA 6 || Source: X

Obbe Vermeij worked under Rockstar Games for over a decade, having contributed to the development of earlier GTA games, including the trilogy and the fourth entry, as a technical director. The veteran developer recently celebrated the 17th anniversary of GTA 4 with a new tweet.

Surprisingly, he added another tweet to the thread discussing GTA 6. According to him, GTA 6 doesn’t require another trailer, as there is already sufficient hype surrounding the title.

According to Vermeij, the element of surprise will make GTA 6’s release even bigger as an event. He may be right to some extent since the first GTA 6 trailer dropped out of nowhere and has garnered over 250 million views to date.

GTA 6 Price Tag Could Set A New Precedent For AAA Games.

Still, the game is expected to receive a proper rollout before launch. Recently, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games, stated that fans can expect a shorter marketing window for the upcoming title.

The next trailer will be released relatively close to the release date, as Rockstar needs to strike a balance between expectations and excitement.

Action RPG Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Set to Launch on July 24, 2025

Story Highlight
  • The action RPG Wuchang: Fallen Feathers comes out on July 24, 2025, on PC and consoles.
  • Players take control of Bai Wuchang, who is sick with a disease that turns people into creatures.
  • Gamers can play it on Game Pass the day it releases.

The upcoming action RPG Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is set to release on July 24, 2025. Developed by Leenzee and published by 505 Games, the game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The action RPG will be available on Game Pass from day one, as the subscription service keeps adding highly anticipated titles to its growing list.

Why it matters: Fans of Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls games will certainly enjoy Wuchang: Fallen Feathers as it combines the best of both franchises.

Set in the late Ming Dynasty, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers tells the story of Bai Wuchang, a female pirate afflicted with a mysterious illness known as the Feathering Disease. This curse turns people into terrifying creatures.

Playing as Wuchang, gamers will explore the troubled land of Shu, a land torn apart by war and disease, facing dangers from both humans and dark forces.

Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game draws inspiration from ancient Chinese societies and literature, incorporating elements from the Sanxingdui and Jinsha archaeological sites, as well as texts such as the Shangshu (Shanhaijing).

The game is a single-player, third-person adventure with challenging combat similar to Soulslike games. Players can choose from 25 different weapons in five categories, each with its own fighting style.

There are also 40 spells to mix into the attacks or use on their own. A key feature is the Inner Demon system—as Wuchang fights or takes damage, her Inner Demon grows stronger, boosting her powers but also making her more at risk.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers Previews
Wuchang Fallen Feathers’ early previews have been very positive.

Pre-orders are now open. Through pre-order, players will get the Night & White Pack, which comes with two outfits (Night Spectre and White Spectre), a special axe called the Vermillion War Club, and a skill boost called Glistening Red Mercury. There’s also a Deluxe Edition with four unique outfits, five weapons, and two skill upgrades.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers will be priced at $49.99 / £44.99 / €49.99. However, pricing may vary depending on the player’s region.

Assassin’s Creed Mercenary System Shows Nemesis System Isn’t Completely Locked Behind WB, Says Dev

Story Highlight
  • Scaffold Studio’s lead says the Nemesis System exists beyond the Lord of the Rings games.
  • Palaver Nelson Jr. says that the concept is present in Assassin’s Creed and other Ubisoft games.
  • The game’s mercenary system is akin to the Nemesis System.

The Middle-earth games have aged like fine wine over the years, mainly due to the Nemesis System, a concept that introduces replayability and evolving enemy designs within the game. Unfortunately, WB Games failed to capitalise further on the idea, with the concept locked behind a patent until 2036.

That said, the design of the Nemesis System remains evident throughout various titles. Scaffold Studios’ lead notes that a similar design to the Nemesis System is still present in various Ubisoft games, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey being a solid example.

Why it matters: Nemesis System is the most unique concept within an RPG to date and still continues to influence other games even a decade later.

The Nemesis System
The Nemesis System Was Created Because Players Kept Re-Selling Batman Arkham Asylum

Scaffold Studio lead Palaver Nelson Jr. recently talked about the Nemesis System in a new issue of GamesRadar Edge Magazine.

I think you can see some similar design language in the Mercenary system in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and some other things Ubisoft has done since then.

For those unfamiliar, newer Assassin’s Creed games feature a mercenary system that attracts several high-tier targets to players, depending on their notoriety level. These mercenaries can be found roaming around ancient Greece.

Moreover, Ubisoft kept things fresh with the Nemesis System through free updates post-launch, keeping things fresher and reactive over time.

The Nemesis patent still gives other designers significant space to operate around

The same concept was also present in the later Assassin’s Creed games. Nelson’s words do hold some weight in this regard since the hierarchy level is quite similar, and enemies can spawn out of nowhere.

Wonder Woman
Cancelled Wonder Woman Game Reportedly Featured The Nemesis System

Still, developers continue to innovate on the concept, bringing their various twists. A notable example is EA’s Black Panther game, which is set to debut its own take on the idea.

What are your thoughts on Nelson’s comments? Let us know in the comments below or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.
