EA Suffers From 300-400 Layoffs And Multiple Cancellation!

Story Highlight
  • As per new reports, Respawn was working on the early development of a Titanfall extraction shooter.
  • EA’s recent round of layoffs has led to the cancellation of this project.
  • The publisher has let go of 300-400 developers, nearly 100 of whom are from Respawn Entertainment.

EA is no stranger to layoffs, and every time the gaming giant cuts jobs, Respawn Entertainment appears to bear the brunt of the cuts more than other teams. Last year, the team faced various layoffs and saw the cancellation of a Star Wars Mandalorian project.

New reports reveal that Respawn Entertainment has been hit hard by layoffs yet again, and one of the cancelled projects included a new Titanfall game.

Why it matters: Fans have been calling for a Titanfall revival for the longest time, so this news is heartbreaking for both the studio and its fans.

Two Major Games From The Studio Have Now Been Cancelled

As reported by Bloomberg, the latest round of job cuts saw a total of 300-400 layoffs at EA. Nearly 100 of the layoffs impacted the Apex Legends studio, resulting in multiple game cancellations.

Although the initial report did not mention Titanfall, sources reveal that the team was working on a Titanfall extraction shooter. This also aligns with recent rumors of a new Titanfall game being in development.

The project was codenamed R7 and abandoned fairly early in development. EA states that the studio will continue to move forward with the development of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi games, effectively killing any hopes of the sci-fi shooter franchise returning anytime soon.

As extraction shooters are gaining more mainstream attention today, Respawn Entertainment’s spin on the genre could have led to a major surge in popularity for the developer.

Respawn Entertainment Is The Latest Victim of Layoffs And Project Cancelations

Between the demand for more Titanfall and the desire for unique first-person shooter gameplay, the studio could have capitalized on a major gap in the market. Unfortunately, the team continues to face layoffs year after year.
