Bend Studios Live Service Title Made No Progress In 3 Years Says Ex-Dev, Cancellation Was Expected

Story Highlight
  • An ex-dev working at Bend Studios revealed that the live-service project made limited progress in 3 years.
  • The animator revealed he could see the cancellation coming miles away.
  • Sony also cancelled other projects at the studio, including a sequel to Days Gone.

Sony’s live-service efforts are set to sail again next year with Marathon, a title that hasn’t had the hottest previews and already faces competition from Arc Raiders

Even with the success of Helldivers 2, most of Sony’s live-service projects have been cancelled, including the God of War title from Bluepoint and the one in production from Bend Studios. And, if you ask one of the devs working on the game, it was coming from miles away.

Why it matters: A studio as talented as this getting entangled in the web of live-service development and canning projects with actual potential is never good to see.

Days Gone Bend Studio live-service
Morisson revealed that the Days Gone dev had made little progress.

According to Robert Morrison on X, an animator who worked on the live-service Bend Studios title, the team did not make enough substantial progress in the 3 years of development. Hence, he could see the cancellation coming miles away with little to no important work done.

Bend Studios’ live-service IP was canned back in Januaryand the studio also underwent layoffs after this unsuccessful production. Other sources have also stated that an Uncharted revival was in the planning stage from the Days Gone dev before it started working on the live-service game.

Furthermore, Sony actually cancelled more than one title in development at Bend Studios, including a sequel to Days Gone, which the studio itself didn’t greenlight for some reason.

Uncharted-4 Featured bend studios
Bend Studios wanted to work on an Uncharted game, too.

Hence, the American developer has been through some troubling times, but it is already working on a new multiplayer title and trying to deliver something cool, as promised. Whatever the case, the cancelled Days Gone sequel and live-service title will remain as unrealized potential forever.

Do you think this new game from Bend Studios will make up for its unrealized potential this generation? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.

Mafia: The Old Country Devs Announce New Game Tied to Major Hollywood IP

Story Highlight
  • Stormind, which helped develop Mafia: The Old Country, has secured major investment.
  • They’ll be developing many new games, including one based on a major Hollywood IP.
  • For now, the studio hasn’t disclosed any details, including what the IP will be.

Mafia: The Old Country was primarily developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K. However, another studio, Stormind Games, collaborated with them to develop the beautiful 1900s Sicilian location, showcasing its incredible talent.

Stormind recently announced that it has secured major investment to develop many future games. Using the same, it will be developing a major Hollywood IP, but the name hasn’t been disclosed.

Why it matters: The studio has shown its intent to become a major name in the industry, and if it delivers this IP well, it could be on a path to cement its place.

Mafia-The-Old-Country
Mafia co-developers have secured funding for a title based on a major Hollywood IP.

The report comes from Gamesindustry, which also spoke with the studio’s CEO, who said he wants them to grow into a multi-title studio while staying independent and keeping their Sicily-based identity.

Now, it isn’t clear what the game will be, but Stormind does have experience with another major Hollywood IP. Last year, it released A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, which had a decent overall reception.

A Quiet Place The Road Ahead Image
The studio previously worked on A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead.

So, the studio has a proven track record of good releases. There are many major Hollywood IPs that fans would like to be turned into games. But for now, our guess is as good as yours, so we’ll have to wait and see what it is.

Dragon Quest 1 & 2 Remake Scores a Near-Perfect 94 on OpenCritic

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes debut at an impressive 94% on Open Critic.
  • Reviewers praise Square Enix for keeping the classic JRPG elements alive while modifying the games with a modern feel.
  • Visually, the game is also beautiful, and Square Enix’s HD-2D style truly shines here.

Following on from the build-up to the Dragon Quest 3 remake last year, which was a highly successful endeavor from Square Enix, the developers have now remade the first two games, combined in a bundle, and almost perfected the remake formula.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes have now debuted with a near-perfect score of 94% on Open Critic. Square Enix has once again perfectly recreated the classic JRPG feeling while adding a modern touch.

Why it matters: The Dragon Quest franchise has been around for nearly 4 decades, but newer fans haven’t had the chance to play some of the older entries. These faithful remakes allow a newer audience to experience what made the series popular in the first place.

While it was unusual for Square Enix to start Erdrick’s trilogy with the remake of the third entry, the Erdrick story is now finally concluded with the release of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes, which are also regarded as among the best in RPG history.

Square Enix’s HD-2D style combines the best of classic and modern graphics with 2D pixelated characters and a 3D environment that ensures that the nostalgic touch is never lost, all while offering a brand-new experience.

New story and content are also added with the remakes, but none of them will ever feel exclusive to the original games.

From the bundle, Dragon Quest 2 Remake is a far better experience, while most reviewers claim that the first entry should’ve received a bit more tune-up, but nevertheless, if you’re an RPG fan, these remakes are a must-play experience.

The Metal Gear Solid Franchise Has Now Surpassed 65 Million Sales

Story Highlight
  • The Metal Gear Solid franchise has now sold 65.1 million copies overall.
  • Sales of Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake are speculated to be less than 2 million.
  • Konami is interested in more remakes and is also looking for Kojima’s replacement.

Konami has finally returned to the Metal Gear Solid franchise after nearly a decade of silence with a remake of the third entry. Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake has been off to a strong start, even managing to sell a million copies within 24 hours of launch.

The entire franchise has now been pushed to 65 million sales total. Thanks to this push by Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, it’s almost guaranteed that Konami will further pursue the franchise with new entries.

Why it matters: The Kojima-created stealth series has been regarded as a pioneer for modern titles in the same genre. Over 65 million sales put the franchise among gaming’s best-sellers.

As of earlier this year, before the release of Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, the franchise had sold 63.3 million copies. Currently, the figure is at 65.1 million copies, up by 1.8 million sales since the last quarter.

This also means that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake is yet to sell 2 million copies overall.

While fewer than 2 million sales aren’t decent enough as per today’s standards, critically, Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake was received quite well. As such, Konami is now letting fans decide for themselves what remake should come next via surveys.

Konami Declined The Proposal For A Matrix Game

Initially launched in 1987, the franchise has been handled by Hideo Kojima. However, the director departed from Konami soon after the release of Metal Gear Solid 5 due to a fallout. Now, the Japanese publisher is looking for a replacement director but is open to working with Kojima again, although that is unlikely to happen.

Barely Out the Gate, Battlefield RedSec Is Already Being Review-Bombed on Steam

Story Highlight
  • Battlefield RedSec is being review bombed on Steam.
  • The base Battlefield 6 game forces players into the Battle Royale mode, which is already filled with glitches, issues, and more.
  • If EA wants to achieve its goal of 100 million players, then this approach will result in failure.

Coming back to form wasn’t enough for EA as they aim to snatch the FPS crown from CoD. Battlefield 6 Season 1 recently launched alongside the highly anticipated BR mode, RedSec, that follows a similar blueprint to that of Warzone.

Unfortunately, RedSec isn’t making that big of an impact as EA expected. 2 days into launch, the Battle Royale mode is already being review-bombed on Steam, with the majority disappointed with the developers’ approach to this mode.

Why it matters: With RedSec set to play an important role in making Battlefield 6 successful, EA should’ve invested more time in refining the mode, and reviews show it needed more polishing.

Player Review Talking About Being Forced To Play BR

The biggest issue is that EA is forcing Battlefield 6 players to play the Battle Royale mode with the weekly challenges tied to RedSec. Some players just aren’t interested in playing RedSec, and it’s frustrating for them.

Furthermore, the Battle Royale mode itself isn’t receiving praise either. With most reviewers calling it a Warzone clone, RedSec’s formula feels repetitive to them. Other than that, hit register issues, glitches, and bugs worsen the gameplay experience.

Player Review Talking About The Mode’s Cons

Players also demand bigger maps and say that the Battle Royale mode might be the reason behind the absence of ‘true big maps‘ from Conquest and Escalation. Most are also calling for a solo experience as queueing with randoms turns into a ‘terrible play’.

Previous reports revealed that EA executives expected 100 million players for Battlefield 6, and such a feat was only possible via a Battle Royale mode. However, RedSec isn’t looking too great right out of the gate, and just to reach even half the goal, EA needs to really make some significant changes to make the mode look appealing and please all sorts of players.

Xbox Reports A Massive $113 Million Fall in Revenue, Hardware Down by 29%

Story Highlight
  • Xbox’s latest financial report highlights a huge $113 million year-on-year revenue decline.
  • Hardware sales fell by 29%, while Xbox content services saw slight growth.
  • Despite the decline in hardware sales, Xbox is still planning to release its next-gen hardware.

Once a massive empire, Xbox has now somewhat fallen from grace. The console sales are at their lowest, and even some recent great titles haven’t been much of a redemption either. The company’s latest financial report reflects this.

In its latest financial report, Microsoft reported a $113 million decline in revenue. There has also been a 29% decline in hardware sales. However, Xbox content and other services saw a slight increase.

Why it matters: This aligns with Microsoft’s decision to go full-blown publisher, as the hardware isn’t selling well but its software is doing better, leading to a slight increase in revenue.

Xbox Revenue Fall
Xbox has reported a massive $113 million loss in revenue compared to last quarter, year-on-year

In its FY2026 Q1 report, Microsoft reported $5.508 billion in revenue, down from $5.621 billion in FY2025 Q1, a $113 million decline. Total revenue fell by around 2%, which isn’t that much compared to hardware.

Microsoft reports a 1% increase in Xbox content and services, driven by Game Pass and third-party content. So, primarily, the growth occurred away from any hardware, emphasizing the need for a multiplatform strategy.

Everything Is An Xbox
Xbox content and services are the major drivers of the slight growth in the gaming department.

Despite all this, Xbox isn’t shying away from hardware for the next-gen. Instead, it is now almost confirmed that the next Xbox will be a PC-console hybrid costing over $1000. So, how fans react to it will be seen later.

However, based on the current results, Xbox isn’t doing that badly as it may seem. The software is doing fine, but the hardware is costing them big time. With its major games now on PS5, the software revenue could grow further.

Nintendo’s Anti-Palworld Patent Shot Down for ‘Lacking an Inventing Step’

Story Highlight
  • Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Palworld for allegedly copying mechanics from Pokémon.
  • The Japan Patent Office has shot down the claim, saying it lacks originality.
  • The case reveals Palworld has been based on games like Ark, Monster Hunter, and more.

Following the massive success of Palworld in 2023, Nintendo immediately filed a lawsuit against the creators of the game Pocketpair, claiming that it was ripping off elements from the Pokémon franchise.

A recent development in the case has ruled in favor of Pocketpair, as the Japan Patent Office found Nintendo’s filing against Palword ‘lacking an inventive step.’ Furthermore, Nintendo has to either drop the case or modify it to proceed further.

Why it matters: Nintendo has been known to take copyright infringement seriously. However, if this case results in the loss of the Japanese publisher, it will be a rare loss for them.

Gamesfray did a breakdown of the case, and the Japan Patent Office stated that Palworld has mechanics similar to other games like ARK: Survival Evolved and Monster Hunter 4, among others.

Initially, the lawsuit was aimed at Palworld’s copyright infringement related to creature capture and riding mechanics from Pokémon games.

With Nintendo now asked to drop or modify the case, it is likely that the Japanese gaming publisher will modify the case in order to proceed. However, the case is likely to go in Pocketpair’s favor.

Pocketpair’s lawyers even submitted documents earlier that Palworld’s mechanics were based on games like Ark, Tomb Raider, and more.

What are your thoughts on this case? Do you think Palworld is really copying Pokémon, or have the mechanics existed for long enough? Let us know in the comments below, or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

As AI Boom Continues, Nvidia Becomes First Company to Top $5 Trillion Market Cap

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia has beaten Apple and Microsoft to become the first company to reach a $5 trillion market cap.
  • Exponential growth has been possible thanks to the AI revolution over the past few years.
  • What started as a small setup has become the world’s biggest tech company.

Back in 1993, Jensen Huang started Nvidia as a small setup, unsure whether it even had a future. Over 30 years later, Nvidia is a household name dominating the GPU landscape and has now achieved a major milestone.

As of today, Nvidia has become the first company ever to hit a $5 trillion market cap. While the company is indeed the world’s most prominent graphics card manufacturer, its sales have seen a significant boost since the AI boom.

Why it matters: Nvidia crossing this massive milestone signifies its place as the biggest company in the tech space, and it continues to grow at an exponential pace, crossing $5 trillion just 3 months after hitting $4 trillion.

Today, Nvidia saw an around 3% increase in its stock price, taking its market cap to over $5.07 trillion- the first company to do so. However, others like Apple and Microsoft have also grown beyond $4 trillion.

The biggest reason for this huge growth has been the AI revolution and Nvidia’s leadership. Since ChatGPT arrived, the company has seen big leaps, with its GPUs at the center of it all.

Innovation Needs Good Profit Margins, Declares Microsoft CEO Amid Rampant Xbox Price Hikes

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says gaming needs to innovate if it hopes to compete with short-form content.
  • He believes good profit margins are also necessary to drive innovation.
  • This statement comes after Xbox raised prices across the board to improve its profit margins.

Gaming prices have gone up across the board recently, but among the three console manufacturers, Xbox has undoubtedly led the charge.

According to reports, Microsoft expects profits as high as 30% from the gaming division, and Satya Nadella recently shared his outlook on the financial side of the gaming business. From his perspective, profitability is paramount to an innovative future for gaming.

Why it matters: Microsoft’s profit-seeking approach to gaming makes it a major outlier in an industry that has traditionally operated on thin margins.

Satya Nadella believes gaming faces more competition than ever in the form of short-form content.

This is because TikTok videos, YouTube shorts, and various reels on other platforms dominate engagement today, creating a cycle of consumers gravitating toward short-form content.

Nadella is of the opinion that gaming needs to innovate to come up with a solution to challenge this dominant style of content. He also believes profits are important toward that end.

The best way to innovate is to have good margins because that’s the way you can fund.

Going by the Microsoft CEO’s response, it comes as no surprise that Xbox prices have gone up as much as they have recently.

Microsoft’s next-gen console is also expected to cost more than $1000, setting the stage for an ultra-premium piece of hardware from the brand. Of course, whether this will be enough to keep the Xbox business going remains to be seen.

Traditionally, consoles have been sold at a loss, and gaming profit margins have not been the best. However, the medium has still seen a lot of innovation and experimentation over the years, so Satya Nadella’s response is very interesting.

Satya Nadella Has A Very Different Approach To Gaming Than His Competitors

Even with games being priced at $70 or $80 today, the experiences haven’t necessarily improved significantly over the $60 era, so it will be interesting to see whether Microsoft can truly provide the innovation it seeks following the latest price changes across Game Pass and consoles.

What do you think about the CEO’s stance on profit margins? Do you expect innovation from Xbox moving forward? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

6 Years Later, DMC 5 Remains Capcom’s Best Seller With 2.13 Million Sold in H1 2025

Story Highlight
  • Devil May Cry 5 sold 2.13 million copies in the first half of 2025 and is the best-selling Capcom game of this year so far.
  • Overall franchise sales are at 37 million now.
  • Currently, there’s no word on a new Devil May Cry entry but the demand for a new gmae is increasing rapidly.

In the pursuit of Resident Evil games, perhaps Capcom has forgotten about its magnum opus, Devil May Cry. The last entry was released 6 years ago, and even after this long, we’ve yet to hear from Capcom about a new project.

Surprisingly, Devil May Cry 5 is still at the top of Capcom’s charts and continues to sell well. In the first half of 2025, the game sold a whopping 2.13 million copies, becoming the publisher’s best-selling game of this year thus far.

Why it matters: This much sales even after 6 years of launch shows that fans are craving a new entry, and before the hiatus increases so much that Devil May Cry becomes a forgotten IP, Capcom needs to do something with it.

Capcom
The Publisher’s Share Price Has Rapidly Declined This Year

As per Capcom’s latest financial results, Devil May Cry 5 sold nearly 1.7 million copies in Q1 2025, while sales slowed tremendously in Q2, falling to just 352k. The surge in sales was attributed to the Netflix adaptation, which helped introduce many new players to the IP.

Overall sales for the series are now at 37 million.

As such, it is the perfect moment for Capcom to announce a new entry, but the franchise is in a difficult position, especially after Hideaki Itsuno departed from Capcom in pursuit of a new entry.

CAPCOM
Japanese Studios Are More Innovative, Says DMC Creator

Capcom would need to find a new game director for future Devil May Cry games, and finding the replacement won’t be an easy task by any means. Hideaki Itsuno also believed that Devil May Cry 5 was the series at its peak, and topping that would be extremely hard.

Still, Capcom won’t know unless they try. Even production members from past entries are waiting for the publisher’s call to return for a new entry, but the IP’s future remains to be seen.

What do you expect from a new Devil May Cry game? Let us know in the comments below, or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Recently Spoke About Gaming For Several Minutes Without Mentioning ‘Xbox’ Even Once

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently spoke about the end of the console wars.
  • He discussed the gaming business for multiple minutes without mentioning ‘Xbox’ even once.
  • The CEO is more focused on the publisher side of the gaming division compared to console hardware alone.

Microsoft’s Xbox business has been through all sorts of changes recently, with some decisions shocking fans more than others. Between multiplatform releases, OEM hardware, and an uncertain future, the brand has raised more than a few eyebrows.

Recently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella attempted to clear the air regarding Xbox’s future, answering questions about Microsoft’s current focus. Interestingly, he did not mention the word ‘Xbox’ once throughout one very interesting multiple-minute-long clip of the interview.

Why it matters: Microsoft now seems to be looking at gaming as just another part of the business, as opposed to letting Xbox be different from the other Microsoft sub-brands.

Speaking to TBPN, Satya Nadella was asked to share his thoughts on the future of Microsoft’s gaming division in a post-console war era, and he noted that Windows is the biggest part of the gaming business.

The CEO reiterated his commitment to being a reliable gaming publisher and even drew a comparison to Microsoft Office in terms of being available across all devices for the larger user base.

The biggest gaming business is the Windows business to us.

Satya Nadella also noted that Microsoft intends to do better on both the console and PC fronts, noting that both are two sides of the same coin. However, the most interesting part of this clip may be that the word ‘Xbox’ was not said even once by the CEO.

In fact, looking at the clip, the discussion went on for over five minutes before Xbox was mentioned, and even though the conversation was diverted to other subjects during this time, it certainly shows Microsoft’s perception of Xbox today.

Whether the CEO intentionally avoided saying Xbox or it happened by coincidence is anybody’s guess, but it certainly did not leave a good impression on fans of Xbox. The brand has been under record levels of criticism recently, and Satya Nadella’s recent interview may hint at Microsoft slowly moving away from the Xbox brand.

In many ways, ‘Microsoft Gaming’ would be a more appropriate name for Xbox today. Perhaps Satya Nadella’s interview highlights Microsoft’s overall outlook and lack of interest in Xbox.

Everything Is An Xbox
Everything Is An Xbox According to Microsoft

Elsewhere, the Microsoft boss noted that gaming’s biggest competition today is short-form content, something that Xbox executive Matt Booty also noted in the past. All in all, this interview, more than anything else, makes Microsoft’s priorities clearer than ever.

What do you make of the interview? Share your opinions in the comments, or visit the Tech4Gamers Forums for more discussions.
