Infinity Ward Says Competition Between Industry Juggernauts Is Good For The Industry!

Story Highlight
  • Modern Warfare 4 and GTA 6 release less than a month apart and will compete throughout Fall 2026.
  • Infinity Ward’s co-Head notes that the team doesn’t fear this competition.
  • The studio believes this competition is great for the industry due to the presence of multiple high-profile titles.

Gaming’s biggest release, GTA 6, is now months away, and the game is already said to have made a hefty sum of money during its pre-order phase. As the release approaches, practically everyone in the industry is waiting to see how Rockstar Games’ latest release turns out.

Many have also delayed or brought their games forward to avoid competing with GTA 6. However, Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward appears to be deviating from the trend, stating that it doesn’t mind competition between Modern Warfare 4 and GTA 6.

Why it matters: Modern Warfare 4 promises to address a lot of the fan criticism from Black Ops 7 after a weak year for Call of Duty. The game practically has to be at its best to compete with GTA 6 when it launches later this year.

GTA 6 Will Certainly Be 2026’s Biggest Game

Speaking to Destructoid, Infinity Ward co-studio Head Mark Grigsby noted that a release as big as Call of Duty inherently comes with a lot of pressure.

He stated that this was the case for each game he previously worked on, and Modern Warfare 4 is no different. The developer went on to explain that GTA 6’s looming presence doesn’t add any extra pressure to the equation.

In fact, he argued that multiple juggernauts like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto releasing in proximity to each other is good for the industry, especially since GTA 6 is expected to be beneficial to the games industry as a whole.

Afraid of it (GTA 6)? No. I think it’s healthy for the industry to have juggernauts like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite. It’s a little head-to-head, that’s great.

Modern Warfare 4 Is Ditching Last-Gen Consoles

Despite what the Infinity Ward developer says, Activision has moved up Call of Duty’s release date forward to October for 2026 compared to last year. This may have been done due to GTA 6 occupying the November slot, but both games will still go head-to-head throughout Fall 2026, and specifically, during the holidays.

Interestingly enough, the same Call of Duty team, Infinity Ward, came face-to-face against GTA 5 in 2013 when it launched Call of Duty: Ghosts during the same year. As such, it will be interesting to see how Modern Warfare 4 turns out, especially following the renewed interest in Call of Duty due to the Black Ops ports.
