Microsoft Now Focusing On Optimizing WIndows Memory Usage!

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft has removed a recent Windows post recommending 32GB of RAM.
  • The change has attracted a lot of attention because Microsoft still sells Surface PCs with 8GB of memory.
  • Microsoft has also confirmed a newfound focus on optimizing Windows 11 for as little as 8GB of RAM.

It wasn’t long ago that Microsoft declared 32GB of RAM the new sweet spot for those intending to game on Windows 11. Only a few months later, the company is now optimizing its OS for systems with as little as 8GB of memory.

Microsoft has also removed the very Windows post that recommended 32GB of RAM for users now.

Why it matters: The memory crisis has forced everyone’s hands, and the latest hardware is no longer guaranteed to ship with copious amounts of RAM and storage.

This Post Has Now Been Deleted

Microsoft’s previous post, which recommended 32GB of RAM as the “no worries” upgrade, is no longer available online. Note that this recommendation was made in the context of gaming, but it was still considered quite tone deaf at the time.

The link to the previous post now redirects users to the Windows Learning Center. A new gaming guide can also be seen here, but Microsoft no longer mentions 32GB of RAM anywhere.

The recommendation was criticized because Microsoft is also selling Surface PCs with 8GB of RAM. This contrast was quite ironic, and Microsoft quickly took note of the irony itself.

According to Microsoft, its Surface lineup with 8GB of memory is perfectly fine for productivity tasks and browsing. Meanwhile, the company recommends the 16GB Surface Pro and Laptop for those interested in exploring Copilot’s many features.

Of course, Microsoft isn’t to blame for the Surface lineup’s limited RAM in 2026. However, many users were quite vocal about Windows 11’s memory-intensive nature, which became all the more apparent amid the ongoing memory crisis.
