- Microsoft mentions 32GB as the new sweet spot for memory when playing games on Windows 11.
- The company mentions that modern games now require more and more memory, and this amount helps keep the experience smooth.
- Unfortunately, 32GB of RAM is quite expensive at the moment due to the ongoing memory crisis.
Memory shortages have impacted practically all segments of technology, including the games business. With RAM prices skyrocketing, many have found it difficult to upgrade their PCs and get their hands on new consoles as prices keep going up.
At a time when memory is more difficult to obtain than it has ever been, Microsoft has come out with a rather interesting statement. In a new post, the company recommended 32GB of memory as the optimal amount for PC gaming.
Why it matters: Most PC gamers rely on 16GB of memory, so Microsoft’s recommendation marks a 2x bump over the average RAM amount. Modern consoles also ship with 16GB of memory.

According to Microsoft’s recent blog post on Gaming Features, 16GB of RAM is the baseline for gaming on Windows 11 in 2026.
Microsoft says that gamers who intend to use Discord and browsers alongside games on the operating system should consider upgrading to 32GB of memory. The gaming giant refers to this amount of RAM as the ‘no worries’ upgrade.
As per the company, memory demands in games are on the rise, so doubling the RAM from 16GB gives modern games breathing room that goes a long way. Of course, doubling memory is easier said than done right now due to the pricing situation worldwide.
This is why Microsoft has made it a point to optimize the Windows platform further, taking inspiration from SteamOS. Anyhow, as per the company, 32GB is now considered the optimal amount of RAM for gaming on PC, especially when playing modern titles.

Of course, this might also mean that the upcoming PS6 and Xbox Project Helix might ship with this much memory in 2027 or 2028.
In the same blog post, Microsoft also offered other recommendations regarding PC gaming. For instance, the gaming giant offers advice on eliminating bottlenecks, using an SSD for games, and more.
