Marvel’s Wolverine Glitch Reveals Expansive Open-World, Hinting At Its Original Design

The Unfinished Map Is Surprisingly Well Put Together.

Story Highlight
  • A YouTuber has found a glitch in Marvel’s Wolverine that lets players explore the open world.
  • The surprisingly coherent and expansive nature of the map is making fans think the title was semi-open-world earlier.
  • The Insomniac project did lose its director mid-development.

It’s safe to say that Marvel’s Wolverine has underwhelmed most of the gaming world following its release. The anticipated Insomniac title was first revealed in 2021, with fans expecting a title at least on the same level as Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, thanks to its excessive accessibility options and below-average visual design, the title has only been criticised so far.

Insomniac has even declared that it will address all the issues players have with the game. Now, a new glitch has revealed that the original plan for Marvel’s Wolverine might have been a lot more expansive than the final product.

Why it matters: Insomniac’s latest foray into the superhero world is another project that has suffered from the modern game development cycle.

As per YouTuber Turned, a glitch in Marvel’s Wolverine lets players go out-of-bounds and explore the unfinished open world. During the mission “The One That Got Away,” fans can access this bug by climbing a building and then jumping off to find an expansive map with scenery and many assets.

Due to the incomplete development of the open world, players can phase through the road, see floating terrain, fall off the map, and even go under the sea. However, this area in Marvel’s Wolverine is surprisingly well put together, with finished assets and collision physics visible in the YouTuber’s video.

Interestingly, players can also access the later part of the map through the out-of-bounds region, hinting that North Vancouver was much more expansive in earlier development. Considering how Marvel’s Wolverine did lose its director mid-production, it won’t be too far-fetched to assume the game was scaled back from a semi-open-world premise.

Wolverine feat
Marvel’s Wolverine was made on a massive $305 million budget.

The Insomniac title needs to sell at least 6 million copies in its first year to be considered a success, but reviews from every corner of the gaming industry have been nothing but scathing.

Do you think Marvel’s Wolverine should have been an open-world title like earlier Insomniac Games? Do you think the title will go on to be a commercial success? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
